Comparative Study on the Properties of Cement Stabilized Lateritic Bricks Sourced from Different Locations

There is need for tested and proven alternative source of alternative walling materials in third world countries such as Nigeria. This will foster massive provision of houses for the populace. The aim of this research is to compare the properties of cement stabilized lateritic bricks sourced from different locations. Soil samples were taken from three locations within the study area to laboratory for Abrasion, Impact, Compressive strength and Water absorption tests.

Results showed that the stabilized lateritic bricks A, B and C have water absorption values varied from 17 to 23 , 32 to 36 and 38 to 42 respectively for 7 - 28 days at 1 cement content. For 2 cement content, water absorption values varied from 15 to 20 , 24 to 28 and 32 to 36 for lateritic bricks A, B and C respectively. While sandcrete block has water absorption values varied from 9 to 13 for 7 - 28 days respectively. It is also observed that stabilized lateritic bricks A, B and C have compressive strength values varied from 1.33 to 1.71N mm2, 0.32 to 0.42 N mm2 and 0.21 to 0.29N mm2 respectively for 7 - 28 days at 1 cement content.

For 2 cement content, compressive strength values varied from 1.52 to 2.09 N mm2, 0. 40 to 0.63N mm2 and 0.29 to 0.35 N mm2 at 7 - 28 days for lateritic bricks A, B and C respectively. While sandcrete block has compressive strength values varied from 0.54 to 0.74 N mm2 for 7 to 28 days respectively. The higher the cement content, the lower the absorption rate and the higher the compressive strength. The compressive strength also increases with age. Lateritic brick is more cheaper than sandcrete block for construction of building because it require little cement content. Further study should be conducted for another source of stabilizer.

Assessment of some Chemical Properties of Isan - Ekiti Soil, Southwestern Nigeria

Increase in knowledge of Chemical properties of soil will prevent or reduce road failure in tropical climate such as Nigeria. This study aimed at assessing some chemical properties of lateritic soil deposited in Isan - Ekiti, South-western Nigeria. Soil samples collected from the study area were subjected to CEC, Organic Carbon content, pH and Refractive Index tests. The CEC, Organic Carbon content, pH and Refractive Indices values for all the soil samples varied from 35.00 to 58.00 , 31.00 to 46.00 , 6.00 to 6.21 and 1.529 to 1.533 respectively.

It could be generally observed there were presence of large deposit of lateritic soil with large contents of clay and its minerals. The soil in the study area were acidic in nature though weak and likely to have high retention capacity. There could be presence of clay minerals such as Allophone, Chlorite, Illite and Steatite in study area's soil. Further study on the other Engineering properties of the soil should be carried out.

Analyses of some Engineering Properties of Isan - Ekiti Soil, Southwestern Nigeria

Today, all over the World, soil plays major role in Civil Engineering works or construction. Its thorough assessment is impossible if its Engineering properties were overlooked. The aim of this study is to analyze some Engineering properties of lateritic soil deposited in Isan - Ekiti, South-western Nigeria. Soil samples collected from the study area were subjected to Atterberg Limits, CBR and Grain Size laboratory tests.

It is observed that the LL, PL, PI, SL and CBR values varied from varied from 41.10 to 57.50 , 24.60 to 35.50 , 14.80 to 22.70 , 0.32 to 0.61 and 4.38 to 30.21 respectively for all the soil samples. It could be generally observed all the soil samples were classified as granular soil material with mainly silty or clayey gravel and sand constituent materials with some stone fragments.

Their general rating as sub-grade materials is "Excellent to good". They were grouply classified as A - 2 - 7 and were only good for sub grade filling materials. There is need for further study on deposited materials around the study area for good base and sub base courses materials.

Analyses of some Geotechnical Indices of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti Lateritic Soil used for Bricks

The need to overcome housing problems for the populace in a Third world country like Nigeria through the use of cheap and available construction materials is the ulterior motive of this study. It sought to analyze some geotechnical indices of the lateritic soils to be used for the production of the alternative material e.b. Bricks . Soil samples were taken from three locations within the study area to laboratory for Atterberg Limits and Particle Size Distribution tests.

Results showed that the Liquid Limit LL , Plasticity Index PI and Plastic Limit PL values varied from 37.80 to 46.00 , 15.00 to 20.30 and 17.50 to 28.00 respectively for all the soil samples. Their clay, sand and gravel also ranged from 36.4 to 56 , 33.2 - 51.6 and 5.6 - 10.4 respectively.

The soil samples were generally as silt - clay and grouply classified A - 6 A - 7 materials with mainly clayey constituent materials. All the soil samples would be good for brick making due to large quantities of clay and sand with very little gravel. There is need for further study on other geotechnical indices of those soils in order to further ascertain their suitability.

Green and Light Weight Vehicles Power Transmission System Design and Development

The learning on green vehicle was introduced and promoted to reduce the difficulty of air toxic waste caused by emissions of conventional vehicle. The Green mobility are vehicles with low fuel energy consumption and low zero exhaust gas emission, these vehicles are like hybrid, battery powered, and fuel cell electric vehicle that can be enhanced to be more efficient than the conventional vehicles through a new design and development of power transmission system. Power transmission system for green and lightweight vehicles consists of different components like gear box, propeller shaft, differential and final drive.

In this review more emphasis is given to gear box due to some reasons firstly, it is one of the heaviest component of the power train system and as a result weight reduction is critically needed to increase the efficiency of the vehicle. Secondly, gearshift takes place therefore, torque interruption needs to minimize. The outcome from the simulation software will be validated by investigational tests on test rigs.

One way of minimizing fuel consumption is to reduce the weight of the gearbox by 10 reduction in vehicle mass can enhanced fuel economy by about to 7 . The dissimilar researchers confirm that to have high vehicle efficiency the type of the transmission they used matters. A vehicle using automated manual transmission AMT and dual clutch transmission is more efficient in terms of less energy loss and gearshift comfort.

Analysis of Active Power Flow Control with Phase Shifting Transformer in AC Transmission Line

Nowadays, active power flow should be controlled because voltage fluctuation occurred on various load conditions. Phase shifting transformer PST is used to control the active power flow in three phase electricity transmission network. It can increase reliability and can serve as an alternative to new investments in overhead lines. The control of active power flow is achieved by adjusting the phase angle of the voltages at the PST terminals. In this paper, 230 kV AC transmission line is chosen for active power flow control.

Two conditions, maximum and minimum load conditions are considered as a case study for active power flow control performance in a selected line. Simulation of active power flow with PST model is carried out by using Matlab software. Finally, according to simulation results, system voltages and active power depend phase angles are revealed in this paper.

Design and Simulation of 80 kHz High Frequency Converter Using CD 4047IC CMOS

The electrical power appliances which convert source frequency to another frequency level is known as frequency converter. This research proposed a novel design method to achieve the 80 kHz high frequency converter. In this design, the circuits have been made which contains step-down transformer, inverter circuit using MOSFETs, CD 4047IC and step-up transformer. Single phase source is used as a source.

Therefore, the rectification is used to convert the AC source to DC source and to supply the 12V by using voltage regulator. Inverter is used to convert DC to AC. Circuit simulation was done by using Proteus software.
