Soil Classification Using Image Processing and Modified SVM Classifier

Recently the use of soil classification has gained more and more importance and recent direction in research works indicates that image classification of images for soil information is the preferred choice. Various methods for image classification have been developed based on different theories or models. In this study, three of these methods Maximum Likelihood classification MLC , Sub pixel classification SP and Support Vector machine SVM are used to classify a soil image into seven soil classes and the results compared. MLC and SVM are hard classification methods but SP is a soft classification.

Hardening of soft classifications for accuracy determination leads to loss of information and the accuracy may not necessary represent the strength of class membership. Therefore, in the comparison of the methods, the top 20 compositions per soil class of the SP were used instead. Results from the classification, indicated that output from SP was generally poor although it performs well with soils such as forest that are homogeneous in character. Of the two hard classifiers, SVM gave a better output than MLC.

Experimental Investigations on Strength Characteristics of High Performance Concrete Using Silica Fume and Superplasticizer

For several decades, concrete has been the most widely used construction material. Though conventional concrete CC performs very well under normal conditions, in special situations a very high compressive strength of concrete is necessary together with sustainability to aggressive environments. Hence, higher compressive strength of range 60-140 MPa is essential.

The concrete mixes so far were designed only for strength and workability requirements. For the performance of long satisfactory life, the designed mixes should be checked and proved for their durability properties such as low permeability, high corrosion resistance, freezing and thawing resistance, fire existence etc. This necessitates a detailed study on High performance concrete HPC . This paper formulates a simplified mix design procedure for HPC by combining BIS and ACI code methods of mix design and available literatures on HPC. Based on the above procedure M80 and M100 mixes are arrived at. These HPC mixes are tested experimentally for compression, split tension, flexure and workability. The performance of the designed mixes is very good and the results are reported in this paper.

A Comparison Study Between Two Hydrogen Sensors

In this research work, a comparison study has been carried out between Palladium Pd coated PMMA Poly Methyl Meth acryl ate optical sensor and Palladium thin films sensor that have been prepared on glass substrates. PMMA were sputter coated with Palladium using a sputter coating facility offered by the He riot Watt University, during sputter coating the target palladium is showered with argon gas such that atoms from the target are ejected by the ionized gas and then deposited on the PMMA substrate. Palladium thin films have been prepared on glass substrates by vaporization deposition technique with annealing temperature is around 600 C.

Relative inertness of the sensors to relative humidity makes it specific to detect hydrogen at low concentration. Target environments for the proposed sensors are fuel cell cabinets, industrial process plants, submarines, nuclear fuel power generation and decommissioning plants.

Results showed that optical characteristics of the prepared sensors are highly sensitive, but their properties considerably vary when the measurements conducted in vacuum or in air. In the two sensors the response-recovery time of Pd materials to hydrogen gas characterized to be extremely short.

Applications of Energy Storage Systems in Wind Based Power System

Due to the global environmental concerns, increasing energy demands and developments in renewable energy technologies present a new opportunity to implement renewable energy sources. Wind energy is the most prominent among renewable sources, as it is an inexhaustible resource and its exploitation has thus far been ecologically friendly. The potential amount of wind energy is considerably greater than current worldwide energy demands. Wind energy has been developing more rapidly than the other renewable energy sources for the last few decades. The best way to harvest the wind energy is wind turbines.

This paper presents a study on wind energy in the form of a stand-alone and hybrid power generation system used to electrify off-grid locations. The stand-alone wind-diesel system developed here is intended to be used to power a single house or a small community and it also functions as a mini-grid, generating power in places where adequate wind speed is available throughout the year.

However, many places throughout the world experience unsteady amounts of wind speed and in those places, a hybrid wind-diesel system is the most efficient solution for electrification. The main benefit of the hybrid system is that the weakness of one source is covered by the other source. This paper also presents some comparative case studies, project examples and demonstrations of stand-alone wind diesel hybrid systems implemented at various locations throughout the world over the last twelve years.

Frequency Regulation and Active Power Control in Wind-Diesel Based Hybrid Power System Using BESS

Hybrid power systems must be self-sufficient in terms of frequency and voltage control due to their islanded operation. A control strategy to combine the operation of a wind generator, a diesel generator, a battery energy storage system and a dump load for frequency regulation is proposed in this thesis. The proposed strategy partitions the control task into two subtasks a choosing the element to be operated on, b providing frequency regulation. A global controller, based on an IF-THEN inference engine, chooses the element to operate. The frequency regulation is provided by separate individual controllers.

In this thesis, a hybrid power system has been modelled and the proposed control strategy has been tested. By monitoring the systems power management and frequency, it is shown that the proposed control strategy operates efficiently. The proposed strategy also reduces the number of measurements required and facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources.

Design of a Controller for Systems with Simultaneously Variable Parameters

The contribution of this paper is in suggesting an analysis and design of a control system with variable parameters. By applying the recommended by the author method of the Advanced D-partitioning the system's stability can be analyzed in details. The method defines regions of stability in the space of the system's parameters. The designed controller is enforcing desired system performance. The suggested technique for analysis and design is essential and beneficial for the further development of control theory in this area.

A Compression Based Methodology to Mine All Frequent Items

Data mining is not new. People who first discovered how to start fire and that the earth is round also discovered knowledge which is the main idea of Data mining. Data Mining, also called knowledge Discovery in Database, is one of the latest research area, which has emerged in response to the Tsunami data or the flood of data, world is facing nowadays. It has taken up the challenge to develop techniques that can help humans to discover useful patterns in assive data. One such important technique is frequent pattern mining. This paper will present an compression based technique for mining frequent items from a transaction data set.
