Process Improvement Using Statistical Process Control in a Small Scale Industry

Different methods are used in an organization to improve productivity, one such method is Statistical process Control(SPC).Statistical process control is a collection of tools, that when used together can result in process stability and variance reduction, thereby leading to a more streamlined production process.

This paper presents a case study of SPC to improve the performance of current process by reducing the variability in the dimension of parts produced, there by diminish rejections and improving the process. By carrying out mathematical calculations and using various SPC tools, process capability study was done under existing conditions, some improvements were done in the existing welding fixture used for producing the part to improve their capabilitiy indices.

In this study after the application of SPC tools and integrating the suggested changes in existing process, great improvements were seen, as such the capability indices which were 0.1.1&0.38 respectively for the existing process, increased to 1.91&1.50 respectively for the improved process, thereby representing good process performance with higher strength.

Experimental Investigation on the Properties of Concrete with Plastic Pet Bottle Fibers as Partial Replacement of Fine Aggregates

Industrial activities in India are associated with significant amounts of non-biodegradable solid waste, waste plastic being among the most prominent. This study involved 86 experiments and 254 tests to determine the efficiency of reusing waste plastic in the production of concrete. Thirty kilograms of waste plastic of fabriform shapes was used as a partial replacement for sand by 0%, 1%, 2%, 2.5%, 3% and 5% with 80 kg of concrete mixtures.

All of the concrete mixtures were tested at room temperature. These tests include performing slump, compressive strength, cost analysis, and weight analysis. 14 cubes were molded for compressive strength and dry density tests, Curing ages of 3, 7, 14, and 28 days for the concrete mixtures were applied in this work.

The results proved the arrest of the propagation of micro cracks by introducing waste plastic of fabriform shapes to concrete mixtures. This study insures that reusing waste plastic as a sand-substitution aggregate in concrete gives a good approach to reduce the cost of materials and solve some of the solid waste problems posed by plastics.

Behaviour of Interlocking Hollow Concrete Blocks

India is one of the highly populated countries of the world. It ranks the second in population next to China. Besides, major section of the people live below poverty line. Due to over population, poverty, high land value & house deficit, major cities like Delhi & Mumbai are covered by slums. These slums not only make our country aesthetically bad but also the people living in such slums are deprived from basic facilities like proper sanitation, health care, and proper housing. The provision of affordable housing for these poor people needs to be facilitated by certain provisions.

This can be possible only by introducing such technologies and materials that can be beneficial for building low-cost houses. Researchers worldwide have made significant efforts to find sustainable and affordable technologies to arrest the situation. Appropriate solution for affordable housing will vary from one location to another. Some general rules, however, apply to construction methods and housing systems.

This project aims for developing a technology called dry stacking or mortar less buildings made from interlocking blocks. Mortarless brick construction, usually employing interlocking bricks, is growing in popularity round the world, indicative of acceptability. Mortarless techniques demonstrate the following advantages: increase of construction productivity, reduction in construction duration and labor and reduced construction cost. Because of its technological simplicity and local resource dependence, mortarless-block construction is more appropriate to many local communities than conventional mortared-brick techniques.

Air Pollution Monitoring System

Particulate matter is the most dangerous form of air pollution because it does not only affects the human health but also has an impact on the earth' climate and precipitation levels. This paper proposes an easy and cost-efficient method to measure dust particles, volume of CO (carbon monoxide), temperature and humidity for weather forecast.

A dust sensor, gas sensor, temperature and humidity sensor collect the data from the environment and this data is given to the Node MCU which is an open source IoT platform running on ESP8266. The ESP8266 is a low cost Wi-Fi microchip which processes the data. The Processed data is given to the IoT server. When the mobile application requests for data it is fetched from the IoT server.

Energy Efficient Compression for Wireless Sensor Network

Energy efficiency is one of the most important design metrics for wireless sensor networks. As sensor data always have redundancies, compression techniques provide energy savings. However, different emphases on algorithm design influence the operation effect of compression under various applications and network environments. In order to improve the energy utilization efficiency for the whole network, an efficient data compression has to be proposed.

Drought Assessment Using Standard Precipitation Index

Drought is one of the extreme climatic events among the most relevant natural disasters. This paper presents drought assessment using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) to overview the respective drought hot spots. Monthly rainfall data during the previous 36 years (1982 "“ 2017) are applied to generate Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) with 3-month and 9-month scale on the basis of Gamma distribution for the areas in the central dry zone of Myanmar namely Mandalay, Nyaung-U, Myingyan, Natogyi, Meikhtila, Kyaukpadaung, Wundwin, Sagaing, Monywa, Shwebo, Myinmu, Magway, Minbu, Chauk and Pakokku. The generated SPI values for different time scale are classified to assess drought hot spots for the central dry zone, Myanmar as an areal extent of annual drought.

Comparative Study on Effect of Fly Ash and Rice Husk Ash on Strength of Concrete

The construction of concrete pavement is growing across the country due to its strength, durability, better serviceability & overall economy in long run. The need is to develop better quality pavement sections, which can bear heavy loads. This can be achieved by using high compressive strength concrete (>40MPa) made up of hydraulic cement having fine & course aggregates. In the work embodied construction work is done with the help of wastage from industry.

Fly ash is a by-product of burned coal from thermal plants and Rice husk ash is the by-product of burned rice husk from paper plant. Considerably Fly ash and Rice husk ash are used as supplementary cementing materials to improve the properties of cement concrete. The present study is done to develop pavement quality concrete by partially replacement cement with Fly Ash & Rice Husk Ash. The aim of study is to compare the strength characterises of pavement concrete which as achieved by concrete mixtures.

The work done in this study shows the effects on the behaviour of concrete produced from cement with combination of FA and RHA at different proportions on the mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, flexural strength. The replacement of cement were done at three levels is 10%, 20% and 30% with both Fly ash & Rice husk ash as well as combination of both Fly ash and Rice husk ash.

The tests on hardened concrete were destructive in nature which includes compressive test on cube for size (150 x 150 x 150 mm) at 7 and 28 days of curing as per IS: 516 1959, Flexural strength on beam (150 x 150 x700 mm) at 28 days of curing as per IS: 516 1959. The samples were prepared with different water-cement ratio as 0.30, 0.35 & 0.40 for flexure design i.e. 5.5 MPa, 5.0 MPa & 4.5 MPa respectively.

The result so obtained showed that it is possible to achieve saving in cement if replacement is done. The study proves to be beneficial in area where traffic load is less, also will use wastage released from thermal plants & rice mills also reduces economy as this materials is easily available. The waste material from industries is in bulk amount, as lesser amount of these used as supplementary cementing materials so these can be used as filling soil in subgrade of highway pavement.
