Strengthening of High Strength Concrete Beam Column Joints using FRP

The entire world built up space is being made with concrete being the basic construction material. The advancement in the construction technique has raised the height of buildings as compared to the past. Although the design of structures follows the safety and serviceability rules according to the specialized codes formulated by different countries as per the geographical location, the greatest threat to all the frame buildings is the phenomenon of earthquake. The sudden vibration of the earth on which the structure is resting makes the Beam Column joints the vulnerable part. This experience of large deformations during the seismic excitation is not feasible because this join is the first element which overtakes cracks in such situations. Many research scholar have formulated one of the best solutions to this problem is the confinement of beam column joints. From literature review it is found that use of fiber reinforced plastic can strengthen the joints and are being effectively used for retrofitting due to ease of accessibility and placement. This experimental study is carried out to investigate the behavior and or performance of RC interior beam column joints by using FRP. In total four specimens have been casted and rehabilitated with CFRP Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer , the specimens were subjected to incremental cyclic loading applied by hydraulic jacks under constant axial or gravity load, deflection was recorded corresponded to load. The behavior of rehabilitated specimen is compared to the undamaged specimens. It has been observed that the wrapping with double layer over double layers of overlay of CFRP sheets exhibit the great and satisfactory results among the entire wrapping scheme applied to the specimens.

State of the Art in the Field of Hardware Implementable Image Resizing Applications

Image zooming is a principal image processing operations. JPEG methods are acceptable standards while it is among lossy methods, but still produce acceptable quality outcome. Zooming deals with resizing images in search of details, increased resolutions, for optics, printing or generic image processing 4,1 . The uses of image interpolation are generic viewing of online images up to the magnification of satellite imagesThis paper presents a review of all the prevalent techniques for zooming of images. Lot of appreciable work has already been done in this field. Our objective is to review the prevalent work and look for a better alternative. We concluded that bulks of the algorithms are based on traditional methods, but we have shifted our focus to adaptive methods. The traditional methods have many issues, and they have been discussed here. The paper has reviewed most of the interpolation based techniques along with real world examples. However, there isn’t much relevant literature on adaptive zooming methods. Many interpolation algorithms currently being used commercially produce magnifications that include undesirable issues like blurring, jaggies and ghosting, and that’s why we need a more comprehensive interpolation technique that can eradicate these flaws.

Analytical Study of Multistoried RCC Building with Various Bracing Systems on Seismic Response Control using Pushover Analysis Method

The seismic conduct of multi celebrated structure outline during a tremor movement relies on the dissemination of solidarity, mass and solidness in both level and vertical planes. Supporting framework is only the parallel power opposing framework. Tremor instigates sidelong powers on to the parent components of building. Sections are the essential horizontal burden opposing component of any multi story. These sections alone cant counter the assault of quake hence propping individuals were presented inside the casings of multi story to rise the horizontal solidness of the important structure. The sidelong power on segments is communicated to supports through bar section joints pivotally. Propping individuals plunges the horizontal avoidance of the structure by clasping and yielding during hub pressure and strain separately. Supports can be introduced inside casings in different setups like corner to corner, X, V chevron , rearranged V and K. This work shows that the examination seismic execution and conduct of building outline with and without vertical anomaly regarding boundary base shear, story relocation, story float, , otherworldly quickening and unearthly dislodging. Factors Leading to Major Casting Defects and their Influence on Productivity of Foundry

In recent times, with the constant utilization of natural resources, every manufacturing unit is turning towards a lean approach. Foundries are no exception to this. Although the fundamental responsibility of a foundry is simply to convert raw metal into a useful casting, it is imperative on their part that the output confirms with the quality as desired and is free from defects of any kind. However, there may be factors like the rate of cooling of molten metal being poured, mould properties, metallurgy of the molten metal being poured and the mould geometry and rigidity to name a few which may have their influence on the casting quality and the overall productivity of the foundry. While striking a balance between the quality and productivity, there may be certain deviations undertaken from the regular course that may lead to casting defects. This paper intends to highlight such interdependencies and suggest indirectly the most feasible means to control casting defects in order to ensure attainment of both quality and productivity. Casting defects considered for this work shall be those observed at a major scale and those which require adequate attention on account of frequency of occurrence. A conclusion shall be drawn towards the end dictating the major findings of the study.

Analysis and Design of Pre Cast Box for Road under Bridge and Road Over Bridge by using Staad Pro

A level crossing or a grade crossing is a place where railroad line and a street meet each other at a similar level. In the Urban regions for the most part the level intersections are checked by qualified railroad staffs that screen the train development and close the level intersection door to stop the meddling street traffic yet such shutting of entryways prompts gridlock in streets, makes loss of time the street clients and now and again likewise prompts a mishap. The best choices to kill the level going across are Road under Bridge RUB and Road over Bridge ROB . There are 3 fundamental strategies for development of street under scaffold. Box pushing strategy, Cut and spread strategy, moving method utilizing RH brace. In this paper a plan of Road under Bridge or Subway by Box Pushing Method is introduced. During that time, traffic is continuing overhead typically, ignorant of the development beneath. The no problematic nature of the cycle along with its inalienable wellbeing, effortlessness and economy make box pushing a valuable apparatus for the rehearsing structural designer. This paper means to carry a more noteworthy experience with the crate pushing cycle to the peruser and afterward give a few contemplations and rules to help engineers in planning an undertaking that can be assembled utilizing the container pushing strategy. Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer through Corrugated Channels A Review

The continually rising energy consumption pushes researchers and engineers to create more effective energy systems to better use energy sources. In order to manufacture more compact heat exchangers, which are used in air conditioning systems, chemical reactors, heat power plants and others, it is important to improve the heat transfer rate with an appropriate pressure drop. Currently many engineering strategies are applied to increase energy systems thermal transfer efficiency, such as surface changes, swirl flow creators, flow conditioners, additives etc. Researchers are also involved in applying these methods to further increase the reliability of energy systems, while many experimental and numerical details are available in the existing literature. Since the corrugated channel is a passive technique to maximise heat transfer, researchers have insisted that one or more passive active methods be used in corrugated channels to allow further changes. The purpose of this paper is to collect accessible research data based on the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rates across corrugated channels in particular. The previously obtained conception conditions, functional limits, and assumptions of energy systems are also discussed.

CFD Analysis for Heat Transfer Enhancement of a Corrugated Plate Heat Exchanger using Different Corrugated Channel Configurations

The flow properties of heat transfer across such corrugated channels are very distinct from parallel plate channels. The primary flow direction is parallel to the waviness of the channel of the corrugated channel, although the local flow direction is still changed due to the waviness of the channel. By flow recirculation, separation and re attachment, the thermal boundary layer formed on its walls is regularly disrupted and the convective heat transfer coefficient is thus increased. In this work, in corrugated channels, the convective heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of flow have been tested numerically. On channels of uniform heat flux and fixed corrugation over a Reynolds number spectrum, 10000 = Re = 30000, numerical research was conducted. The impacts of channel configuration, variation in Reynold’s number, and concentration variations of nanoparticles in base fluid on heat transfer are discussed. As opposed to the traditional corrugated channel, a major heat transfer gain was associated with the proposed corrugated channel. Based on the nanofluid concentration, Reynold number and channel configuration of the corrugated channel, the average Nusselt number increased by a factor of 2.2 up to 2.8 compared to that of the semi circular corrugated channel. Compared with the effect of channel configuration variation, triangular corrugated channel was the best Nusselt numbers, followed by the shape Semi circular Triangular , and Semi circular corrugated channel with the lowest results.

Thermal Performance of a Plate Fin Heat Sink with Half Round Pins using CFD

As electronic devices continue to advance towards high performance and miniaturization measurements, heat dissipation problems have become a major obstacle to their growth. Moreover, the conventional method of air cooling did not fulfil the heat dissipation criterion of high density. Many scientists have researched the thermal efficiency of heat sinks, but the effects of half round pins on plate fin heat sinks have not yet been explored in the best possible way. In this work, a CFD model is developed to evaluate the effect of half round pin on the thermal performance of plate fin heat sinks, compared with literary experimental data. Here in this work, a constant heat flux of 18750W m2 along with a variable value of inlet air flow i.e. 0.00092, 0.00218, 0.0033 and 0.00433 kg s has been applied. In particular, the plate fin heat sink subject to impinging flow was compared to the conventional design Plate fin heat sink without half round pins . Variation of conventional thermal resistance is compared with the approach proposed in the air mass flow rate of different values. The results of this study show that the base temperature along with the thermal resistance of the heat sink with half round pin is lower for the proposed design. Nusselt number in proposed approach is found to be 28.98 higher than the conventional design at various values of the air mass flow rate due to increase in average heat transfer coefficient. Therefore, the developed approach has strong potential to be used to improve the thermal performance of heat sinks and hence to develop more advanced effective cooling technologies.

A Literature Review on the Role of Zycotherm as an Additive used in Bitumen

Water is one of the prominent damaging elements in asphalt pavement due to its enormous detrimental effects on pavement performance. Moisture damage induced by the actions of water reduces the strength as well as durability of asphalt mixtures, tends to cause various types of distress such as potholes, stripping, and others to the pavement, formed by lack of cohesion and adhesion. To sort out this problem, the modification of bitumen is needed to enhance its properties for pavement surface. Ergo, the current paper introduces the findings of prior research studies on Zycotherms effect as an anti stripping agent, recently developed, chemically reactive nanomaterial that imparts strength to the surface of the pavement. In this study, optimum bitumen content by Marshal Mix Design, without and with necessary dosages of Zycotherm upgraded from Zycosoil and alterations in properties are reported through various tests.

Numerical Investigation of Solar Air Heater Duct using Broken‘S’ Shaped Ribs Roughness on Absorber Plate

The solar air heater has an important place among solar heat collectors. It can be used as sub systems in many systems meant for the utilization of solar energy. Possible applications of solar air heaters are drying or curing of agricultural products, space heating for comfort regeneration of dehumidifying agents, seasoning of timber, curing of industrial products such as plastics. When air at high temperature is required the design of a heater becomes complicated and very costly. As far as the ultimate application for heating air to maintain a comfortable environment is concerned, the solar air heater is the most logical choice. In general solar heaters are quite suitable for low and moderate temperatures application as their design is simple. These solar air heaters have low heat transfer efficiency which can be improved using geometrical modifications like optimizing duct geometry or adding artificial roughness. The use of artificial roughness on the underside of the absorber plate is an effective and economic way to improve the thermal performance of a solar air heater. Several experimental investigations, involving different types of roughness elements, have been carried out to improve the heat transfer from the absorber plate to air flowing in solar air heaters. In this paper the CFD analysis on heat transfer and friction in rectangular ducts roughened with broken‘S’ shaped ribs has been presented. The relative gap width g e is varied from 0.5 to 2.5 and other parameter are constant. The effects of gap width g e on Nusselt number, friction factor and thermo hydraulic performance parameter have been discussed and results compared with smooth duct under similar conditions. It is found that the maximum heat transfer and friction characteristic at a relative gap width of 1.

A Trial of Fly Ash with the Mix of Nano Silica for Deviation of Strength in Concrete

The primary elements of aggregate in concrete are to settle the measurements of the substantial part by decreasing the volumetric changes because of drying shrinkage of the bond water glue in solidified concrete, to diminish the warmth of hydration, and to go about as a filler material to streamline in the using of concrete. Since aggregate is an extraordinary, important piece of concrete, its qualities fundamentally influence crisp concretes workability, solidness, strength, warm properties, and solidified concrete unit weight. Concrete is one of the famous construction materials available today. Concrete is a composite of crushed rock, sand, gravel, or other mixture control composed by a hardened blend of cement and water. Concrete has found use in all construction types, from highway, canal, bridge, and dams to the most beautiful and artistic buildings. Its formed by mixing cement, coarse and fine aggregates, water, and additives in a certain prescribed proportion. Total is one of the main ingredients in concrete. It covers more than 60 75 of the overall volume of any concrete mix.

Parametric Evaluation of Tall Structure with Various Lateral Load Resisting Systems Subjected to Dynamic Loadings

The high rise buildings are majorly suffering with seismic forces, it can be found out by displacement parameter. The more the displacement the lesser will be the stiffness of the structure. The static analysis is having higher displacement value than response spectrum analysis. The increase in percentage is about 17 . This will increase the construction cost due to increase in stiffness. The base shear value increases with increase in weight of the structure. However, the diagrid structure seems to be having lesser weight than all other models. From the overall analysis it is proved that, diagrid structure is very much effective than any other structure. However, in case of constraint in providing diagrid due to its architectural features, the outrigger system with bracing will be very much effective.

Influence of Blanching on the Drying Characteristics of Convective Hot Air Dried Aerial Yam

A research on the drying characteristics of aerial yam using convectional hot air was done. The raw unblanched and blanched samples were dried using convectional hot air. Fan speed, temperature and slice thickness were varied to determine the change in moisture content. The Fourier transform infrared FTIR and scanning electron microscopy SEM were done to determine the functional groups and surface morphology respectively for each sample. FTIR results revealed the presence of some important functional groups such as esters, ethers and nitro compounds, and shows that drying at this temperatures 40 70oC does not alter the nutrient components of this variety of yam. The SEM results showed that important cells were not destroyed at the drying temperature. Batch studies on the drying process also showed that increase in temperature and air speed increased the drying process, but decreases with increase in slice thickness. Effect of drying rate on the sample showed that drying rate increase with increase in temperature and air speed but decrease with increase in slice thickness. After 90 minutes of drying, the drying rate of the 2 mm slice thickness was 0.353 g g.min for drying of aerial yam while for 4 mm and 6 mm slice thickness, the drying rate were 0.261 and 0.169 g g.min respectively, for effect of drying rate on sample thickness. It showed also that blanched aerial yam sampleshad a higher drying rate than the unblanched aerial yam sample at the same conditions. Therefore, the economic advantages of this yam species can be optimized by blanching.

Use of Hybrid Nanofluid to Increase Heat Transfer Performance of Double Pipe Heat Exchanger using CFD

In present work, forced convection of a turbulent flow of, Al2O3 water nanofluid and Al Al2O3 water hybrid nanofluid a new advanced nanofluid composited of Al and Al2O3 nanoparticles through a double pipe heat exchanger is numerically analyzed. The solid model of the double pipe heat exchanger is created in design modular and analyzed by the computational software ANSYS 16.0.This work examines the effects of these two fluids as the working fluids, a wide range of Reynolds number 20000 = Re = 60000 and also the volume concentration 0.25 , and 0.5 on heat transfer and hydrodynamic performance. The finite volume discretization method is employed to solve the set of the governing equations. The results indicate that employing hybrid nanofluid improves the heat transfer rate with respect to nanofluid. However, the average increase of the average Nusselt number when compared to nanofluid in Al Al2O3 water hybrid nanofluid is 14 and the amount for the average increase of heat transfer coefficient would be 27.5.

Position Repeatability Test for Knife Gate Valves with Electro Pneumatic Positioners

Repeatability is an important characteristic of the measurement of faithfulness of the response of a system over a period of time. Be it mechanical or electronic equipment, over a certain period of time, there is a certain amount of hysteresis that sets in which renders the system incapable of carrying out its operation with the necessary precision. In applications that employ Knife Gate Valves to control the flow of lesser demanding solid particulate media like powders and fine mixtures, it is necessary that the positioners mounted on the valves display repeatability at all values of opening in every operating cycle. At least during the serviceable life of the valve, it is imperative of the positioner to ensure that hysteresis is not set in and that the internal mechanism is capable of yielding precise results. This paper shall consider four positioners mounted to Knife Gate Valves and subject the same to a repeatability test wherein the valves will be opened to a predetermined opening percentage for two cycles. The current input readings corresponding to these percentage openings shall be noted and graphs shall be plot to understand the repeatability behaviour. The mean values of current input readings for the four positioners shall be plot to determine the reproducibility of the experiment. A conclusion shall be drawn thereafter considering the experimental observations.

Failsafe Revival Test for Knife Gate Valves with Electro Pneumatic Positioners

Processing applications work on the principle of metered flow of working media to ensure accurate execution of the processes in the further stages. These may include food or raw material processing units that are highly concerned about the quantity of flow media passing through a given section in a given period of time. Foe specific applications, higher precision is required when it comes to the percentage of opening of the flow area as the same is directly proportional to the success of the process. In such cases, special accessories called positioners are used that can position the valve trim components to a desired extent to initiate the necessary percentage opening of flow. This paper shall focus on such positioners mounted on Knife Gate Valves and their ability to deliver precision in the opening percentage. The condition considered shall be that of a failsafe revival requirement wherein during operation, if there is failure of electric power or air supply, the valve shall act according to the set failsafe condition and once the electric power or air supply is restored, the valve opens to the same opening as it was before the said failure. This can clearly demonstrate the property of precision of the positioner. In order to ensure wider applicability, four such positioners shall be considerde and an experimental procedure shall be put forward and followed accordingly. The results obtained shall be described in the form of graphs and a conclusion shall be drawn accordingly towards the end.

Adaptive Image Resizing using Edge Contrasting

Zooming is an important image processing operation. It can be termed as the process of enlarging or magnifying the image to a given factor. Indiscriminate application of a function to an image in order to resample it, produces aliasing, edge blurring. So the objective is to reduce these artifacts. This paper considers distinctive interpolation systems identified with versatile techniques with innate abilities to ensure sharp edges and subtleties. It is a versatile resampling calculation for zooming up pictures In this work, a versatile edge improvement procedure is proposed for two dimensional 2 D picture scaling application. The foreseen picture scaling calculation comprises of an edge identifier, bilinear interpolation and Sobel filter. The bilinear interpolation characterizes the power of the scaled pixel with the weighted normal of the four neighboring pixels, inserted pictures become smooth and loss of edge data. The versatile edge upgrade procedure is utilized to secure the edge includes successfully, to accomplish better picture quality and to dodge the edge data. The Sobel filter endeavors to decrease the commotion, in obscured and mutilated edges which is delivered by bilinear interpolation. A mathematical control and equipment sharing strategy are utilized to lessen registering asset of the bilinear interpolation. The examination shows that edges are very much safeguarded and interpolation artifacts obscuring, jaggies are decreased To contrast existing algorithms and proposed strategy calculation, we have taken original pictures and results for discussion. And we have gone to the choice that proposed calculation is superior to the current algorithms. We have looked at the images by two different ways – Mean Square Error MSE and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio PSNR.

A Comprehensive Review of Possibility using Solar Energy for Electricity Generation in Libya

Libya suffers from electricity shortages, and many challenges will have to be overcome to meet future increases in electrical demands. The deficiency of electricity generation in Libya is clearly manifested in the fact that demand on electricity still exceeds its supply as blackouts become more frequent. In peak demand time, blackouts and outages are the major phenomena in almost all the Libyan regions. Due to technical issues, illegal connections and throughout the lengthy civil war, the generation and transmission in addition to distribution functions suffered partial destruction and consequent outages. For all the mentioned problems, Renewable energy sources and technologies have potential to provide solutions to the long standing energy problems being faced by the Libyan electricity. Alternative renewable energy sources like solar energy technology can be an important part of Libyas plan not only to add new capacity but also to increase energy security, address environmental concerns, as well as to overcome energy shortage. Libya is very rich in solar energy resources and possesses large wasteland areas in the Sahara that represent 88 of the total area and much of this is relatively flat. Libya is one of the countries with the abundance of this type of energy, with a daily average of the sunshine reached to 8.1 kWh m2 day, and where annual solar activity more than 3500 kWh m2 year on the horizontal surface. Losses in the transmission and distribution system will be reduced since power is generated near loads. The grid availability and stability will increase and individuals can save money in their electricity bill and finally the generated power is clean and nonpolluting. This paper presents the main sources of alternative renewable energy in Libya and its potential besides the main reasons Libya is turning to alternative energy solutions to fully utilize its renewable energy resources, fulfill the energy demand in the future and to reduce the outages of electricity and carbon emissions. The study also found that, there is need to investigate more the potential of offshore wind, biomass, and hydro tide and wave thermal energy .The paper finishes with some conclusions and recommendations.

Performance Based Analysis of RC Framed Structure with and without Dampers for Different Seismic Zones

The primary requirement of humans on planet earth is food, clothing and shelter. Prehistoric men and women used to live on trees but steadily they started developing the shelters for protection against natural calamities like rains, cold etc. and also from attack against wild animals. Soon humans grew in knowledge and they started living together, forming communities to ensure additional security and man became a social animal. Now these communities developed and started exploding forming villages which later on transformed into cities and became the commercial centres of a region. Soon within these commercial centres, land for horizontal expansion became extinct. The social animal started expanding vertically constructing multi storied structures. The present study focuses on 12 levelled multi storey structure. The structures are considered to be located at various seismic zones. The Performance of the structure is found out by static nonlinear structure. Further, these structures are provided with seismic dampers. The Modelling and analysis are carried out using ETABS software. The performance of these structures is studied and compared using various parameters such as displacement, storey drift, base shear and time period. Along with these results performance of building is predicted based on demand capacity graphs. The results are extracted and conclusions are drawn. From the pushover analysis, the performance point is found out for all the models. And also, it found that, weakest junctions of the models. The Pushover analysis shows the models with dampers are having base shear than the models without damper. The increase in percentage of base shear is around 45 . The introduction of damper causes the improvement in lateral load carrying capacity by 45 . The base shear values are lesser for Zone II and highest for Zone V. There is a linear increase in base shear values for increase in severity of zones. From the pushover analysis base shear, it is noticed that all the models are having lesser base shear values in case of equivalent static analysis than pushover analysis except Model type A4. This shows that, the model Type A4 is UNSAFE. The models can be made SAFE by introducing Dampers as in Models Type B4.
