Experimental Investigation of Different Characterisitcs of PVC and XLPE Cables

Diagnostic methods for two major cables, PVC and XLPE cables are presented. As a new diagnostic method for the PVC cable insulation, an analysis of the insulation oil sampled from the splices or the end sealing box is proposed. As for diagnostic methods for the XLPE cable insulation, several methods are described to detect water tree deterioration, which is the only major problem with XLPE cables. These methods are classified into off-line and live-line tests. Especially, newly proposed diagnostic methods are discussed, which can be applied to live line XLPE cables.

These are a measuring method of dc current component in ac charging current of cables containing water trees, a method to measure insulation resistance, and a method of detecting electrical tree deterioration in XLPE cable.

A Survey on Clustered and Energy Efficient Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

The main issue in WSN is energy limited characteristic of the sensor node. So the problem is to have the routing protocol in such the manner that it should be energy efficient in order to increase the life time of the whole WSN. Hierarchical routing architecture divides the whole network in to a group of cluster and only cluster head is responsible to forwarding the data to base station directly or via other cluster heads. In location based architecture of routing, localization of the sensor node is to be used to compute the path to the sensed data.

During the creation of network topology, the process of setting up routes in WSNs is usually influenced by energy considerations, because the power consumption of a wireless link is proportional to square or even higher order of the distance between the sender and the receiver.

Hierarchical routing can be centralized or non- centralized. In non-centralized hierarchical routing, the sensor nodes self-configures for the cluster head on the basis of selecting a random number. They don't consider the case of residual energy. But in centralized routing the base station is responsible to create cluster. In hierarchical routing architecture, sensor nodes self-configure themselves for the formation of cluster heads. In this paper, we have studied different types of hierarchical routing protocols for wireless sensor networks.

Enhancement of Strength Characteristics of Poorly Graded Soil by Flyash and Cement

Fly Ash is the waste material, which is obtained after burning coal in Thermal Power Plants. It can be used as a stabilizer for soil due to its pozzolanic effect or an inherent self-hardening property under favourable conditions of moisture and compaction. This project aims at increasing the strength of poorly graded soils by using Fly Ash and cement as admixtures. Some percentage of Fly Ash without any additives was utilized so as to reduce the cost of construction and this is a good method for disposal of it. Fly Ash was added in various percentages like 10, 20, 30 and 40 percentages by volume .

Initially all basic Geotechnical properties of the soil such as liquid limit, plastic limit, shrinkage limit, Grain Size Analysis, Specific Gravity, Free Swell Index, Unconfined Compressive Strength, OMC and MDD were determined. Later on the stabilized mixes were tested for CBR California Bearing Ratio which is an indirect measurement of strength. After the detailed experimental investigation it is observed that 30 addition of Fly Ash has shown maximum strengths, so that to obtain much more strengths cement was added in 2, 5, 8 and 10 percentages to this optimum mix of Fly Ash with soil.

After that the soil mixes were tested for CBR California Bearing Ratio to check it's feasibility in Flexible Pavement constructions. The strengths were checked in both Unsoaked and soaked conditions and at various curing periods like 7 and 28 Days. Among all proportions 30 Fly Ash 8 of the cement has shown maximum strengths, so that it was decided as optimum mix. Maximum strengths were obtained at 28 days curing period for all proportions of mixes so that this period is decided as optimum curing period. Eventually this project work facilitates an economical, strong and durable construction material for Flexible Pavements.

A Preliminary Study on Aerated Geopolymer using Calcium Carbide

In this paper a preliminary study is conducted on use of calcium carbide as an aerator in geopolymer paste and mortar. A 12 mole sodium hydroxide with sodium silicate solution was mixed with fly ash in 1 2 ratio to create geopolymer paste. To make mortar, graded sand was used as 3- parts with 1-part paste. Calcium carbide was added in various percentages viz 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 to paste as first trial and mortar as second trial. Calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene gas and heat.

Acetylene gas works as aerator and heat developed helps in ambient curing of geopolymer paste and mortar. The mixes are cast into cubes of 50sqcm and properties such as density, water absorption and compressive strength were evaluated. The 3 calcium carbide paste showed less density, more water absorption and less compressive strength. The mortar's density was hovering around 1800kg m3, water absorption was less than paste and compressive strength was maximum for 4 calcium carbide.

Development of Hybrid Fibrous Panel for Controlling Acoustics in Home Theatre Conference Hall

Human ear will acknowledge as sound when frequency is in the range of 20 to 20000 Hz and more sensitive in the range of 500 - 4000 Hz. Heat and sound insulation panels are generally composed of nonwoven porous synthetic materials such as rock wool, glass wool, polyurethane, polyester and etc. Though these materials have excellent acoustic properties at high frequencies, their structural properties are not enough to defend against low frequency noise. Multi-purpose concert halls face a dilemma and they host classical music concerts, rock concerts and spoken word performances in a matter of a short period. These different performance types require significantly different acoustic conditions in order to provide the best sound quality to both the performers and the audience.

Micro perforated panel absorber backed by air gap is also used in auditoriums and effective only in absorbing specified range of frequencies low frequency . Hence, it is clear that one type of acoustical absorbers is unable to attenuate wide spectrum of frequency noise. Increased usage of synthetic sound absorption materials leads to higher CO2 emission and other environmental issues.

Therefore, many researches turned towards the production of insulating materials by using natural and bio based materials. Natural materials are becoming a valid alternative to synthetic materials and composite panel is proposed with coir fibre alone which is organic in nature, have excellent insulation against thermal and sound and more resistant to fungi rot.

The present work has been focused on the sound absorption performance nonwoven porous coir matt mounted with and with-out air gap, perforated panel faced porous coir matt with and with-out air gap and perforated panel mounted with air gap.

Performance Evaluation of Coating Materials and Process Parameters Optimization for Surface Quality During Turning of Aisi 410 Austenitic Stainless Steel

Stainless steel SS is used for many commercial and industrial applications owing to its high resistance to corrosion. It is too hard to machine due to its high strength and high work hardening property. A surface property such as surface roughness SR is critical to the function-ability of machined components. Stainless steel is generally regarded as more difficult to machine material and poor SR is obtained during machining. In this paper an attempt has been made to investigate the SR produced by CNC turning on austenitic stainless steel AISI316 and martensitic stainless steel AISI410 by different cases of coated cutting tool used at dry conditions.

Multi-layered coated with TiCN Al2O3, multi-layered coated with Ti C, N, B and single layered coated with TiAlN coated cutting tools are using. Experiments were carrying out by using Taguchi's L27 orthogonal array. The effect of cutting parameters on SR is evaluated and optimum cutting conditions for minimizing the SR are determined. Analysis of variance ANOVA is used for identifying the significant parameters affecting the responses. Confirmation experiments are conduct to validate the results obtaining from optimization.

Data Processing Through Image Processing using Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying

Image Denoising is an important pre-processing task which is used before further processing of image. The purpose of denoising is to remove the noise while retaining the edges and other detailed features. This noise gets introduced during the process of acquisition, transmission and reception and storage and retrieval of the data. Due to this there is degradation in visual quality of image. Wavelets play a major role in image compression and image denoising as they support the property of sparsity and multi resolution structure.

Wavelet Thresholding is important technique in wavelet domain filtering. Many image filters are found which perform well when the noise conditions are low. But as the noise conditions go on increasing their performance gets degraded. Thus, it is felt that there is sufficient scope to investigate and develop quite efficient but simple algorithms to suppress moderate and high power noise in images.

Skin Cancer Detection using Digital Image Processing and Implementation using ANN and ABCD Features

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. It starts in skin cells called melanocytes. There are 3 main types of skin cancer, Melanoma, Basal and Squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma is more likely to spread to other parts of the body. Early detection of malignant melanoma in dermoscopy images is very important and critical, since its detection in the early stage can be helpful to cure it. Computer Aided Diagnosis systems can be very helpful to facilitate the early detection of cancers for dermatologists.

Image processing is a commonly used method for skin cancer detection from the appearance of affected area on the skin. In this work, a computerised method has been developed to make use of Neural Networks in the field of medical image processing. The ultimate aim of this paper is to implement cost-effective emergency support systems to process the medical images. It is more advantageous to patients. The dermoscopy image of suspect area of skin cancer is taken and it goes under various pre-processing technique for noise removal and image enhancement.

Then the image is undergone to segmentation using Thresholding method. Some features of image have to be extracted using ABCD rules. In this work, Asymmetry index and Geometric features are extracted from the segmented image. These features are given as the input to classifier. Artificial Neural Network ANN with feed forward architecture is used for classification purpose. It classifies the given image into cancerous or non-cancerous.

The proposed algorithm has been tested on the ISIC International Skin Imaging Collaboration 2017 training and test datasets. The ground truth data of each image is available as well, so performance of this work can evaluate quantitatively.

Coal Ash-Bentonite Mixture as Landfill Liner

Landfills are highly engineering containment systems, designed to minimize the impact of soiled waste on the environment and human health. In case of economically developing countries the design of a liner varies, that depends upon number of factors such as potential of the landfill polluting the land and water environments, the local hydrogeology and meteorology, and the availability of suitable materials and monetary resourced.

Landfill is a land disposal site for waste and its Preparation, management and control must be of the highest standard to minimize the risks to human health and the environment. Well-constructed and maintained landfills are safer than open dumping sites. Landfill liners are exposed to various types of physical, chemical and biological processes which gets affected by leach ate produced from the decomposition of waste dumps.

The aim is to avoid any hydraulic connection between the wastes and the surrounding environment, particularly groundwater. To ensure this, the important characteristics for compacted landfill liners are selection of materials, hydraulic conductivity, strength, compressibility and contaminant retention capacity. Compacted clay liners are of low cost, large leach ate attenuation capacity and resistance to damage.

Natural clay is often fractured and cracked and due to non-availability of suitable soil at a site, it is necessary to mix imported clay materials with industrial wastes to achieve a suitable material. Usually soil, which is rich in clay minerals is used for compacted liner materials. But instead of clay, mixture of expansive soil such as bentonite with fly ash can be used as compacted liner materials for their low hydraulic conductivity which is required to be less than 1.00×10^ -7 cm sec. Bentonite was mixed with fly ash in 2,4 8,12,16, and 20 by dry weight.

A Review on Transformer - Less UPFC

This paper is a review of an innovative technique with a new concept of transformer-less unified power flow controller UPFC . The Transformer-less UPFC is based on two cascade multilevel inverters CMIs , which reduce the complexity of the circuit. The construction of the conventional UPFC consists of two back-to-back inverters which results in complexity and bulkiness which involves the transformers which are complication for isolation and attaining high power rating with required output waveforms.

The proposed controller will reduce the cost and space as compared to the conventional UPFC. A multilevel configuration technique will be used to reduce the total harmonic content and thus increases the overall efficiency of the system.

Design and Construction of an Electric Arc Welding Machine's Transformer

Arc welding machine is the type machine that uses an electric power as an input, which is being supplied through the primary and then transferred to the secondary winding by induction which can be used to carry out welding work by connecting to the output terminal the welding cables. The output of the machine is designed in a way that it can be varied by adjusting the crank of the machines in clockwise or anti-clockwise direction in either to increase or decrease the output current respectively depending on the size of the material it is to be used on. The major component of the machine that carry out such function is the transformer.

This paper focuses on the design and construction of the welding machine transformer. The transformer is single phase which has shell type of lamination core and insulated windings of copper coils. In addition, the windings are given double insulation with the use of varnish solution which helps to prevent short-circuiting in the windings. With the help of Angle iron and lamination core, the core loss, iron loss in the machine is reduced to minimum. The voltage in Vin was determined directly from the mains of power supply and recorded.

The voltage out Vout was recorded when the transformer was connected to the power supply at zero load while the scaling factor is the ratio of the output voltage and input voltage. The turn factor was also calculated to determine the relationship of the turn given to the transformer and the scaling factor. It was also observed that the scaling factor and the turn factor at terminal A is almost the same, this shows that the higher the turns the better the transformer to avoid high current which may cause spark and also improving the efficiency. A New Hybrid Synchronous Reluctance Machine Capable of Ultra-High Output Power

A new hybrid synchronous reluctance machine capable of ultra-high Xd Xq ratio output power has been studied. A d-q model voltage and flux linkage of the hybrid synchronous reluctance machine has been idealized and developed. Also the impedance and current loci from steady state analysis of the machine was obtained. The effect of capacitor loading in the auxiliary winding was investigated. The power factor and torque developed in the hybrid synchronous reluctance machine was compared with the conventional synchronous reluctance machine.

The hybridized synchronous reluctance machine improved the major constraints of conventional reluctance machine - low power output and poor power factor due to low ratio of direct to quadrature axis reactance Xd Xq . To achieve this two elemental synchronous machines was conceived. Both were internally wound with identical winding in the stator. The rotor of one of the synchronous reluctance machine component is round while the other has a salient pole. Both machine halves were mechanically coupled together.

One set of the winding of both machines were connected in series and fed from the main while the other set was also connected in series but transposed between the two section of the of the machine and then connected to a balanced three phased variable capacitance load. It was the capacitance loading of the auxiliary winding makes the overall Xd Xqratio of the hybrid machine to be variable that can theoretically attain values between zero and infinity. This translates to ultra-high output and unity power factor.

A Review on Architecture, Issues, Challenges and Applications in Underwater Wireless Sensor Network

Underwater Wireless Sensor Network UWSN is an emerging technique for various underwater applications such as marine climate observation, pollution tracking, disaster prevention, underwater surveillance etc. And, each of these applications require Sensor Nodes SNs to effectively provide accurate sensed data. A node must know its own location before sending data to its neighbour. The need for location arises because the number of nodes is very large and it is not possible for the base station to nd the nodes' positions, so the individual node is required to send location information along with the observed data to provide exact location to the user, which means the node must localize itself.

However, due to the complex environment, it is very challenging to transmit the collected data to the base station on the surface quickly and effectively. An energy ef cient routing protocol plays a vital role in data transmission. However, due to the speci c characteristics of UWSNs, such as dynamic structure, narrow bandwidth, rapid energy consumption, and high latency, it is dif cult to build routing protocols for UWSNs. In this article, we focus on surveying architecture, challenges, opportunities as well as various applications in UWSN.

Effects of Sub-Grade and Sub-Base Materials Quality on Flexible Pavement A Case Study

Flexible pavements are composed of asphaltic layer, base course sub base materials which laid over a well compacted and strong sub grade foundation soil. Basic engineering properties of Sub grade materials are required for design and Coarse grained soils serves as good for supporting pavements whereas fine grained soils, particularly clayey soils pose problem to pavement. Jimma town is a big trade center and coffee production areas of in Ethiopia but, the current existing condition most parts of the road are deteriorated.

The objective of this research was to investigate effects of subgrade and sub-base materials quality on flexible pavement. The distress is categorized by level of severity according to Ethiopian Roads Authority ERA standard specification to get 4-stations high deterioration of block crack, 6-stations medium deterioration of Alligator crack and 5-stations low deterioration of edge crack of the studied stretch along Ajip to Gebrel church of 10 km in Jimma town.

The samples taken randomly from the deteriorated area of the subgrade and sub-base materials of 15 stations and laboratory tests conducted and also the results were discussed, compared with the ERA, AASHTO and ASTM. The tests result NMC OMC indicated that excess water in the subgrade and sub-base materials according to AASHTO D-180 specification, compaction of subgrade and sub-base layers are below the minimum requirement MDD 97 laboratory density of AASHTO, poor strength CBR 1.76gm cc of AASHTO T-193 and ERA specification, sieve analysis for gradation out of the upper and lower limit of AASHTO T-27 for the subgrade and sub-base materials.

These can be causes of pavement deterioration on flexible pavement. But, the Atterberg's limit test results satisfy the standard specification of ASTM D-4318. From this research recommended that the designer and contractor should be follow the minimum requirement set by standard specification regarding the engineering properties of materials, the side ditch must be constructed so as to prevent infiltration of water to the under lining strata, seal coats shall be applied to prevent infiltration of water through cracked surfaces to subgrade layer of the pavement.

Issues with Reliability of Fuzzy Logic

Since 1973, fuzzy logic has been rejected by a majority of linguists as a theory for dealing with vagueness in natural language. However, control engineers apply fuzzy vagueness in natural language to control system problems. A real world example of automatic fan control has shown that i fuzzy logic can be applied ii probability theory can better model the control system iii Boolean algebra with decision processes can also be applied. In addition, a redundancy issue for fuzzy logic has been raised. Moreover, a number of inherent flaws of fuzzy logic from an engineering viewpoint have been identified i fuzzy logic as probability ii fuzzy conjunction iii fuzzy disjunction iv fuzzy inference engine v fuzzy membership function.

Fuzzy logic has been found to be an approximate model of probability, however, when viewed as probability fuzzy logical operations of OR and AND provide incorrect responses. Fuzzy inference will also fail when fuzzy logical operations are applied. Some theorists have attempted to fix the flaws of fuzzy logic in a system termed "žCompensatory Fuzzy Logic , but the rules of CFL are ad hoc. As a result of the reliability and robustness concerns in fuzzy systems, safety may be compromised.

A Review on Rain Fade and Signal Attenuation by Rain in Ku and Ka Band Satellite Communication at MGC Campus Punjab India

Rain attenuation is a major challenge to microwave satellite communication especially at frequencies above 10 GHz, causing unavailability of signals most of the time. Rain attenuation predictions have become one of the vital considerations while setting up a satellite communication link. Performance of the wireless communication system depends on the transmission path between source and destination transmitter and receiver which is extremely random, vary significantly over different frequency band. because of the heavy rainfall, snowfall, and other climatic condition most of the time wireless communication links are out of service and hence the performance of transmission of micro-wave signal from source to destination attenuate a lot, our primary concern is here outage due to rain. Attenuation because of rainfall play a significant role in design of terrestrial and Earth-satellite radio link specially at frequencies above 10 GHz. Therefore to design a link channel our major concern is to evaluate attenuation due to rainfall.
