Effect of Tsunami Loads on Ulak Karang Shelter Building in Padang City

In recent years, tsunami surges several regions in Indonesia, particularly in Sumatera Island which cause the damage to various facilities and infrastructures, even inflicting considerable casualties. The last strong undersea earthquake in Mentawai, West Sumatera on 2009, has warned the government to face the tsunami disaster in next big earthquake. Therefore, it is needed rescue strategies mitigation in the form of vertical evacuation in high and strong buildings, one of which is in the form of providing shelter at vulnerable area to tsunami. Padang City has built a five story shelter building made of Reinforced Concrete Structures located in Ulak Karang, North Padang. Based on the review, there is no tsunami loads consider by the design consultant in designing the shelter due to there is no Indonesian standard code in designing the shelter building. Actually, the tsunami loads should be considered if the shelter will be used for evacuation due to earthquake and tsunami. This paper presents the effect of tsunami loads on Ulak Karang Shelter structure. The comparison of structural responses on the shelter structure with and without impacted by tsunami loads based on FEMA 646 standard code was also discussed.

Analysis of Retrofiton School Building With Shear Wall and Steel Bracing

The earthquake on 30 September 2009with7,6 magnitude occurred in West Sumatera and it caused the damage to both physical public facilities and infrastructures. The education sectors suffered from structural damage to the school buildings. In order to establish of the new Indonesian Seismic Code, SNI03 1726 2012, it will affect to the performance of structures which was built before the establishment of the new seismic code, in which the building may not be adequate to with stand the working loads. In this study, the performance and structural strength of a two story RC school building SMAN3 Batusangkar designed using previous seismic code SNI03 1726 2002 and it was constructed before2009, was evaluated based on the new seismic code. The result of evaluation on the SMAN3 Batusangkar building shows that the building cannot resist the working loads applied to the structure, especially the earthquake loads, so the building structure needs to be retrofitted. Two retro fitted methods of the builiding were proposed in this study, they are using shear wall and steel bracing systems, which installed on the building frame with different locations. The addition of shear wall and steel bracing are very effective in strengthening the building structure, where the load bearing capacity of the structure increased significantly and the building is able to resist all working loads.

Desalination Approach of Seawater and Brackish Water by Coconut Shell Activated Carbon as a Natural Filter Method

Engineers are challenged to develop cost effective ways to produce large quantities of water suitable for drinking, crop irrigation and commercial use for regions of the world that suffer from water shortages. Water desalination is expensive, requiring large amounts of energy and specialized equipment to convert saltwater into drinking water. The present study aims to develop a cheaper, cleaner, easy and more energy efficient way of desalinating seawater technique by using natural filters, it can help the common people as it affordable during their immediate requirements. The developed technique seemed to be very effective in reducing the concentration of seawater ions. The desalination system is developed by selecting coconut shell charcoal as the substrate material. As per the results obtained from prototype of seawater and brackish water, there is 60 reduction in chloride and 75 reduction in sodium this is mainly due to the usage of activated carbon charcoal as the filter media. It is also observed through experiments that there is 100 reduction in iron,53 reduction in sulphate, 20 reduction in total dissolved solids and 12 reduction in hardness which clearly indicates that the selected filter medias those are activated carbon charcoal, sand, laterite would be used as the filter medias for future experiments on desalination using natural filters. This work is to present an overview of current and future technologies applied to the desalination of brackish as well as seawater to produce freshwater for supplementing drinking water supplies to the common people in smaller quantity. Removal efficiency increases with the increase in contact time respectively, for both seawater and brackish water, which was considered to be maximum purification ~40 .

Automation of Medical Waste Separation using Advanced Technologies to Minimize its Impact on Environment

This paper describes a shape recognition technique using boundary chain codes extracted by a method as described by Pavlidis and used an 8 connected neighbourhood. A chain code is a representation of a two dimensional contour using a one dimensional array. Feed forward neural networks were trained to recognise these chain codes. In addition, backpropagation network is trained using different training algorithms and the resulting optimal parameters are recorded. Depending upon the complexity of the object to be recognised, this technique can used to form the basis for object recognition or as the best method.

The research is also aimed to compare the performance of chain code representation as against centroidal profile extraction. The third objective is to determine the effectiveness of Feed forward artificial neural networks ANNs in recognising and classifying different medical waste items in the image form. The networks were trained on a large number of medical waste items. The wide variety of shapes and textures revealed that just a representation of an object’s boundary is not sufficient to recognise every object in the set, and some form of texture recognition will also be required in recognising medical wastes. The results have shown that chain code has lesser performance as compared to centroidal profile representation. Ramani Bai V. Study of Road Maintenance Fund needs Approach with Link Based and Network Based

Dynamical systems approach can describe the process of roads pavement damage and road maintenance funding allocation scenarios. One of the important thing to predict road maintenance fund needs in the future is how to estimate the traffic that is going through in each link on the road net work. Currently the reare two ways to fore cast future traffic flow, first approaches by link based and the other is network based. Network based approach requires data free flow speed of each link as an input.

In dynamic, free flow speed is affected by the valueo fIRI International Roughness Index . This paper aims to look at the differences total requirement of road maintenance funds need for each year in which the estimated future traffic flows by link based and network based. There are four scenarios allocation of maintenance funds in each year of analysis, ie 20 , 40 . 60 and 80 of the total require ment. From the analysis, it is known that the total funding need for road maintenance at the end of the estimated future traffic flows by way a network based smaller when compared with the link based. In addition, it is known that the road maintenance fund allocation by 80 of the needs, it turns out the total funding need maintenance at the end of the analysis is the smallest.

Reduced Dimension Lane Detection Method

Detecting road lane is one of the key processes in vision based driving assistance system and autonomous vehicle system. The main purpose of the lane detection process is to estimate car position relative to the lane so that it can provide a warning to the driver if the car starts departing the lane. This process is useful not only to enhance safe driving but also in self driving car system. A novel approach to lane detection method using image processing techniques is presented in this research.

The method minimizes the complexity of computation by the use of prior knowledge of color, intensity and the shape of the lane marks. By using prior knowledge, the detection process requires only two different analyses which are pixel intensity analysis and color component analysis. The method starts with searching a strong pair of edges along the horizontal line of road image. Once the strong edge is detected the process continues with color analysis on pixels that lie between the edges to check whether the pixels belong to a lane or not. The process is repeated for different positions of horizontal lines covering the road image. The method was successfully tested on selected 20 road images collected from internet.

Institutional Element in Malaysia Housing Industry

Institutional economic theory stresses the influence of human behavior and regulations in economic environment. Human behavior including interaction with other parties or agent, regulation and policy created by government will put the economy in its own situation. Therefore, this theory is able to describe the economic environment in a broaden aspect and not only see it as the system that will operate independently base on demand and supply.

Institutional theory is commonly applied in land development process but rarely address in housing industry. Therefore, this paper attempted to address housing industry base on institutional theory perspective. Several institutional elements are indicate in Malaysia housing industry base on work by Omar 2001 and the setting of these element is stress in Malaysia housing industry. There are three element of institution such as formal and informal rule technology and interaction between agents in housing industry that influence the behavior of developer in housing industry.

Experimental Analysis on Strength Properties of Glass Fiber Concrete

The current world is witnessing the construction of challenging and innovative civil engineering structures. It has been established that when fibers are added in certain percentage to the concrete improves the strength properties as well as crack resistance and ductility. Fibers impart energy absorption, toughness and impact resistance properties to fiber reinforced concrete material and these characteristics in turn improve the strength properties. In the present experimental investigation the alkali resistant glass fiber of diameter 14 micron, length 24mm, having an aspect ratio of 855 was employed in percentage varying from 0, 10 , 20 , 30 , 50 , 60 and 80 to study the effect on compressive, split tensile and flexural strength on M40 grade concrete. At early age strength, the concrete with more than 20 of glass fiber gain strength around 61 until 82 faster than normal concrete. This implies that glass fibers assist in increasing the Compressive strength of concrete. The higher the glass fiber, in the mix the compressive strength also increases.

Remote Sensing and Unmanned Aerial Device for Early Forest Fire Detection

2016 was a record breaking year in terms of forest fire incidents in South East Asia. The fires were devastating as it caused a lot of damages. In fact, all over the world, 2016 has been an unusual year because it has extended the fire season everywhere, including South East Asia. Causes of fire ranged from natural disasters, the El Nino phenomenon, to man made fires like slash and burn farming and arson. There is a need to know what is really the most common causes of forest fires in South East Asia. This information would help in designing early, real time and fast detection and response to fires that would break up in forests and bushes so that early fire eradication can be done. The scalable characteristic of fires makes it essential that forest fires have to be detected early to stop it from expanding. The information is also important in order to develop a prototype of a system which will be based on the characteristics and vulnerability of forests in South East Asia. A thorough study of the causes of forest and bush fires and its mechanisms of occurrence and expansion will be done and will be the information needed to design and implement a prototype to detect fires early. The prototype will be utilizing a combination of remote sensing and unmanned aerial device i.e. drones that would immediately send information that would facilitate immediate action to eradicate the fire.

Experimental Investigation of Different Characterisitcs of PVC and XLPE Cables

Diagnostic methods for two major cables, PVC and XLPE cables are presented. As a new diagnostic method for the PVC cable insulation, an analysis of the insulation oil sampled from the splices or the end sealing box is proposed. As for diagnostic methods for the XLPE cable insulation, several methods are described to detect water tree deterioration, which is the only major problem with XLPE cables. These methods are classified into off-line and live-line tests. Especially, newly proposed diagnostic methods are discussed, which can be applied to live line XLPE cables.

These are a measuring method of dc current component in ac charging current of cables containing water trees, a method to measure insulation resistance, and a method of detecting electrical tree deterioration in XLPE cable.

A Survey on Clustered and Energy Efficient Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

The main issue in WSN is energy limited characteristic of the sensor node. So the problem is to have the routing protocol in such the manner that it should be energy efficient in order to increase the life time of the whole WSN. Hierarchical routing architecture divides the whole network in to a group of cluster and only cluster head is responsible to forwarding the data to base station directly or via other cluster heads. In location based architecture of routing, localization of the sensor node is to be used to compute the path to the sensed data.

During the creation of network topology, the process of setting up routes in WSNs is usually influenced by energy considerations, because the power consumption of a wireless link is proportional to square or even higher order of the distance between the sender and the receiver.

Hierarchical routing can be centralized or non- centralized. In non-centralized hierarchical routing, the sensor nodes self-configures for the cluster head on the basis of selecting a random number. They don't consider the case of residual energy. But in centralized routing the base station is responsible to create cluster. In hierarchical routing architecture, sensor nodes self-configure themselves for the formation of cluster heads. In this paper, we have studied different types of hierarchical routing protocols for wireless sensor networks.
