Effect of Tsunami Loads on Ulak Karang Shelter Building in Padang City

In recent years, tsunami surges several regions in Indonesia, particularly in Sumatera Island which cause the damage to various facilities and infrastructures, even inflicting considerable casualties. The last strong undersea earthquake in Mentawai, West Sumatera on 2009, has warned the government to face the tsunami disaster in next big earthquake. Therefore, it is needed rescue strategies mitigation in the form of vertical evacuation in high and strong buildings, one of which is in the form of providing shelter at vulnerable area to tsunami. Padang City has built a five story shelter building made of Reinforced Concrete Structures located in Ulak Karang, North Padang. Based on the review, there is no tsunami loads consider by the design consultant in designing the shelter due to there is no Indonesian standard code in designing the shelter building. Actually, the tsunami loads should be considered if the shelter will be used for evacuation due to earthquake and tsunami. This paper presents the effect of tsunami loads on Ulak Karang Shelter structure. The comparison of structural responses on the shelter structure with and without impacted by tsunami loads based on FEMA 646 standard code was also discussed.

Analysis of Retrofiton School Building With Shear Wall and Steel Bracing

The earthquake on 30 September 2009with7,6 magnitude occurred in West Sumatera and it caused the damage to both physical public facilities and infrastructures. The education sectors suffered from structural damage to the school buildings. In order to establish of the new Indonesian Seismic Code, SNI03 1726 2012, it will affect to the performance of structures which was built before the establishment of the new seismic code, in which the building may not be adequate to with stand the working loads. In this study, the performance and structural strength of a two story RC school building SMAN3 Batusangkar designed using previous seismic code SNI03 1726 2002 and it was constructed before2009, was evaluated based on the new seismic code. The result of evaluation on the SMAN3 Batusangkar building shows that the building cannot resist the working loads applied to the structure, especially the earthquake loads, so the building structure needs to be retrofitted. Two retro fitted methods of the builiding were proposed in this study, they are using shear wall and steel bracing systems, which installed on the building frame with different locations. The addition of shear wall and steel bracing are very effective in strengthening the building structure, where the load bearing capacity of the structure increased significantly and the building is able to resist all working loads.

Building Information Model A Graphical User Interface to Generate a three Dimensional Building

From the past few decades, Building Information Modeling BIM has been evolving to become one of the robust domains connecting different dimensions from Architecture, Engineering and Constructions. Even though it was started to take over a large part of the globe in understanding various components of structure, it is yet to reach a common person for generating a 3D building for an given area. In this study, a three dimensional graphical user interface is developed to generate a 3D building from given parameters such as height of the each floor, number of bays in each direction, dimensions of major structural elements and information related to windows and doors. The future work of this tool is to give different three dimensional structures for any given plan including its analysis, design and material quantities at any location of the globe considering local structural types with inclusion of structural standard codes.

Desalination Approach of Seawater and Brackish Water by Coconut Shell Activated Carbon as a Natural Filter Method

Engineers are challenged to develop cost effective ways to produce large quantities of water suitable for drinking, crop irrigation and commercial use for regions of the world that suffer from water shortages. Water desalination is expensive, requiring large amounts of energy and specialized equipment to convert saltwater into drinking water. The present study aims to develop a cheaper, cleaner, easy and more energy efficient way of desalinating seawater technique by using natural filters, it can help the common people as it affordable during their immediate requirements. The developed technique seemed to be very effective in reducing the concentration of seawater ions. The desalination system is developed by selecting coconut shell charcoal as the substrate material. As per the results obtained from prototype of seawater and brackish water, there is 60 reduction in chloride and 75 reduction in sodium this is mainly due to the usage of activated carbon charcoal as the filter media. It is also observed through experiments that there is 100 reduction in iron,53 reduction in sulphate, 20 reduction in total dissolved solids and 12 reduction in hardness which clearly indicates that the selected filter medias those are activated carbon charcoal, sand, laterite would be used as the filter medias for future experiments on desalination using natural filters. This work is to present an overview of current and future technologies applied to the desalination of brackish as well as seawater to produce freshwater for supplementing drinking water supplies to the common people in smaller quantity. Removal efficiency increases with the increase in contact time respectively, for both seawater and brackish water, which was considered to be maximum purification ~40 .

Automation of Medical Waste Separation using Advanced Technologies to Minimize its Impact on Environment

This paper describes a shape recognition technique using boundary chain codes extracted by a method as described by Pavlidis and used an 8 connected neighbourhood. A chain code is a representation of a two dimensional contour using a one dimensional array. Feed forward neural networks were trained to recognise these chain codes. In addition, backpropagation network is trained using different training algorithms and the resulting optimal parameters are recorded. Depending upon the complexity of the object to be recognised, this technique can used to form the basis for object recognition or as the best method.

The research is also aimed to compare the performance of chain code representation as against centroidal profile extraction. The third objective is to determine the effectiveness of Feed forward artificial neural networks ANNs in recognising and classifying different medical waste items in the image form. The networks were trained on a large number of medical waste items. The wide variety of shapes and textures revealed that just a representation of an object’s boundary is not sufficient to recognise every object in the set, and some form of texture recognition will also be required in recognising medical wastes. The results have shown that chain code has lesser performance as compared to centroidal profile representation. Ramani Bai V. Data Warehouse Structure for Energy Monitoring System Towards Campus Sustainability

ICT gadgets are turning out to be increasingly widespread in all parts of human life. ICT devours energy, additionally a significant method for sparing energy. In a university campus, it is not unusual for students to own and use more than one gadgets for personal or academic purpose. Conservatively, it has done as such by making energy using systems performance faster. Taking into contrast the worldwide emphasis of the effect of energy consumption in general, there is a developing focus to the power utilization connected with ICT hardware. This work is designed to calculate energy consumption for ICTs and to show analyzed reports and charts for top managers. To accomplish the research, the author needs to depend on the methodology that permitted us to address ways in which energy can be calculated. In regard to the research, we proposed a program that will calculate total cost of ICT devices used, show charts and reports and store these devices in the database.
