THD Minimization and Fault Analysis of Modular Multilevel Converters

Modular Multilevel Converters M2Cs have become an interesting topology for dc ac conversions and vice versa showing advantages of high modularity, extensible, fault tolerant ability, high quality output and decreased harmonics. Number of converter sub modules SMs operates in a sequence, generating multilevel output voltages and currents. This manuscript focuses on the comparative analysis of M2Cs based upon the total harmonic distortion THD under the application of LCL filter. The objective of filter application is to ensure that voltage harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling is less than 5 . Also, a fault monitoring scheme to detect and localize M2C SM switch failures is discussed. The presented scheme detects and localizes the fault in relatively lesser time. Simulation results are presented in order to verify results based upon the prototypes with 5, 7 and 9 level M2C.

Optimization of FLC Using PSO – FF Hybrid Algorithm Using DSTATCOM for Power Quality Improvement

Electrical power is the most established form of power and the people is greatly dependant on the electric power supply. A life cannot be imagined with no supply of electricity. Most of the industrial and domestic loads require uninterrupted and high standard continuous power supply. The electric power suppliers and consumers are getting more concerned about the quality of electric power that is provided to them and which is consumed by the users. Therefore, retaining the qualitative power is of most important 1 . In this research paper our main aim is to optimize and Analysed the performance of PSO  –  FF hybrid algorithms 2 for the control of DSTATCOM in power quality improvement 3 and the results are analysed with the help of MATLAB software.

Numerical Evaluation of Temperature Distribution and Stresses Developed in Resistance Spot Welding

Resistance spot welding is a type of electric resistance welding used to weld various sheet metal products through a process in which contacting metal surface points are joined by the heat obtained from resistance to electric current. The intense heat generated and rapid cooling of the joint produce residual stresses and distortion in the joint. The prediction of residual stresses before carrying actual welding is important for the prevention of these stresses. In this study thermo elasto plastic analyses are carried out to simulate resistance welding under various conditions. Mild steel sheets of equal and unequal thicknesses and aluminium sheets of equal and unequal thicknesses have been spot welded with the application of pressure which is determined by measuring force on the joint with a load cell. The size and shape of the nugget for different spot welding conditions is ascertained. The residual stresses under different spot welding conditions are compared.

Study of Health and Safety at Nuclear Installations

A study of health and safety at nuclear installations has been presented in this article. The main provision in this context is to set up Health and Safety Commission and Health and Safety Executive to administer regulations concerning the health and safety of persons at work, and of other persons who may be put at risk by the activities of persons at work. Man made sources of radiation including occupational exposures from nuclear reactors and accelerators, natural radiation sources also have been presented. Summary of UK Regulations has been presented as well.

Modeling and Simulation of Grid Connected PV System

The paper describes the Grid connected solar photovoltaique system using DC DC boost converter and the DC AC inverter VSC to supplies electric power to the utility grid. The PV cell model is easy, accurate, and takes external temperature and solar radiation into consideration. The paper presents detailed transient models of the grid connected PV Battery hybrid generation system, and all these models are simulated by using MATLAB Simulink. PV array is firstly connected to the common dc bus by a boost converter, where the battery is also connected by a bi directional DC DC converter, and then integrated into the ac utility grid by a common DC AC inverter. Maximum power point tracking helps PV array to generate the maximum power to the grid, and the battery energy storage can be charged and discharge to balance the power between PV generation and utility grid.

Impact of Shading, Soiling and Temperature on Solar Photovoltaic System

The main objective of this research paper is to study the effect due to shading, temperature, dust accumulation, snow, birddropping. The power output of the solar panels dependent upon the amount of sun radiation which reaches the solar cells and converts it into electrical energy through inverters. A various types of solar cells are used to manufacture the solar panels like Mono crystalline and polycrystalline. Many factors affect the performance of solar panels and efficiency of PV cells. Experiment was done by using some particles of sand 15g,20g , coal 30g , impact of building trees shading at 10m and 20m and at different temperature cold and hot .The power output of both clean and soiling ,without shading or with shading, at high or low temperature is included. The paper will also include the methods by which we can reduce the impact of dust, shading, high or too low temperature and improving the efficiency of solar panels.

The Effect of Building Direction and Natural Airing on Yearly Power Utilization

With increasing global warming, the temperature of the atmosphere is also increasing. Given such climate conditions, it becomes compelling to limit the use of artificial energy sources and find ways to help us control the temperature of a place. This paper deals with reducing the energy consumption of a building without affecting its required temperature by combining different building orientations using an information system. It gives a clear picture of the best suited situation for a particular place. We have used the design software and incorporated factors such as the orientation of the building. It will provide us with the required amount of artificial energy, taking the ideal temperature of the building into account. It will also tell us the difference this setup can make in the long term cost of the building. If these parameters are taken into consideration before building design, better returns in terms of energy savings and long term financial benefits can be achieved.
