Practical Skills Expected of Block Brick Laying and Concreting Students in Technical Colleges in Rivers State

The study identified the practical skills expected of block laying, brick laying and concreting students in technical colleges in Rivers State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 80 respondents, comprising of 70 registered builders from the ministry of works and housing and 10 block laying, brick laying and concreting teachers of the three National Board for Technical Education NBTE accredited technical colleges in Rivers State offering the course. To guide the research, a question was developed and a hypothesis was formulated. An instrument was developed and validated by experts subsequently it was used by the researchers to obtain information from the respondents. Mean and the standard deviation were used to analyse the research question, while t test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed a 44 item practical skills list expected of students of block laying, brick laying and concreting in technical colleges in Rivers State. It was also found that there is no significant difference in the mean response of technical teachers and registered builders in block laying, brick laying and concreting. Regular field trips to construction sites, acquisition of modern machines and equipment, deepened collaboration with private construction firms for enhanced trained of students were recommended.

Planning and Scheduling Construction Projects using Primavera Software A Case Study

Planning and Scheduling are very essential in the large infrastructure projects like road and bridge construction. These projects have numerous stakeholders and large amount of money, resources are invested. Improper planning and scheduling leads to loss of resources, increase in project cost and unpleasant delays. But with computer and software evolution, it is now possible to plan these projects using software like Primavera P6 and Microsoft office project. This paper deals with presentation of AwasYojna project in New Market Bhopal comparing the two different blocks namely Block A and Block B. The project framed stated the advantage and added benefits of web based primavera P6 for planning and scheduling of structures under construction under the government scheme of “AwasYojna” framing the issues and complications faced in the time frame of construction and availability of resources.

Study on Green Concrete using Industrial Waste Product for Rigid Pavement Construction

In this experiment Fly as his used as 10 replace by weight of cement and Eco Sand as the partial replacement of Fine Aggregate from 0 , 6 , 12 , 18 and 24 .The grade of the concrete here is M 30 grade and tested for compressive, split tensile and flexure strength at 7 days, 14 days and 28 days of age prepared and the different strength parameters i.e. compressive strength, tensile and flexure strength. compressive strength of the concrete by replacing 0 to 18 sand by eco sand and 10 cement by fly ash the strength is increase 26.3, 29.22 and 36.28 at 7, 14 and 28days respectively after adding of eco sand strength was decreases in M 30 Grade concrete as compared to the conventional concrete.

Design of Split or Two Piece Axle Shaft for Automotive Application

Axle is a key component in complete power transmission drive train. There are various types of axle shafts used in different type of vehicle and failure modes also of them are different. There are basic two types of axle shaft, one is used in single reduction axles and other one is used in hub reduction vehicles axles in other words double reduction axles . Hub reduction is nothing but the final drive reduction generally located near to wheels. Generally Axle shafts are being made up of medium carbon ally steel with through hardening treatment. Axle shaft connects differential with wheel rim in case of single reduction axle and with sun gear in case of double reduction axles. Axle shaft transmits torsion load from differential to the wheels and prime component to generate necessary traction to propel the vehicle.

Review on Planning and Scheduling of Construction Project by Management Tool Primavera P6

Modern construction system has shown great potential in the field of the conventional construction system. The advantage of using new construction techniques for any type of construction is that the process takes no longer. The modern method of construction is defined as a way of working more effectively to achieve more while using less. The description lends itself heavily to offsite or modular construction techniques the method of prefabricating parts of building offsite before transporting and assembling them at their final location. Unlike traditional methods of construction is defined as a way of working more effectively. Poor construction management will cause the delay. Delay in the contracted project can result in penalties and adversely affect the reputation of the company. It is essential to manage the work within time. If construction time increases, construction cost also increases. It is necessary proper planning and management for construction work. Primavera p6 is a management tool. In this study primavera software help in the planning and scheduling of the project. Primavera gives better quality of project management process and easily understanding results.

Performance Study on California Bearing Ratio Values using Geosynthetics

The main use of geosynthetics or geofabrics is ensured in any given geotechnical engineering work or application. Sometimes, design and construction of pavement on weak soil creates many of the problems due to its load bearing capacity because of high axle loads vehicles on expansive wet soil subgrades, now we have many techniques to modify the properties of such soil. In this study we can perform the California bearing ratio testing over woven and nonwoven geotextile combined between soft subgrade and unbound gravel in an unpaved flexible pavement system is carried out experimentally on CBR testing arrangement. In order to improve the results we can take the reinforcement ratio is obtained based on the CBR load which is penetration relation of both soft subgrade gravel and soft sugared geotextile gravel separately for woven and nonwoven geotextile. After performing the CBR strength test on soil we can check how much geotextiles required to cover the soil according to the bearing strength of soil shows that the performance is improved after including woven and nonwoven geotextile. The construction of roads over soft subgrade soil is a challenge for any engineer to reduce the cost and then using of geofibers effects the cost of construction and duration of highway projects due to this sometimes rescheduled the construction work in many regions where soft subgrades are common over a large area. The strength of the subgrade mostly expressed in terms of California bearing ratio CBR , which is the ratio of test load to standard loads at a specified penetration by a specified plunger. If we use Geosynthetics or Coir fiber as a main component used in highway construction then it is economical because additive layers like asphalt, concrete and cement concrete are not used and saves the cost of these materials. The soil samples used in CBR test were prepared with two types of soil which are Clayey and sandy contains reinforced and non reinforced soil. The samples has the composition of three types of geotextiles with different characteristics i.e. 150, 200, 300 g m2 and depths or heights i.e. 10, 20, 30,50, 100 mm and it can be grouped into two forms i.e. one layered and two layered based on the sample materials in order to requirement or perform defined tests. Using of geofibers increases the bearing load capacity of soils, we can use one layer of geotextile used in wet soils and sandy samples. From last few years geo synthetics have joined the list of traditional civil engineering construction materials. In this whole study strength characteristics were studied using the California bearing ratio CBR test method.

An Assessment of the Prospects of Introducing Solar Energy in the UNEC Energy Mix

With the continued annual increase in the number of students and staff within the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus UNEC , the demand on energy has continued to rise. There is need for an efficient and regular power supple to meet the growing demands in order to ensure proper functioning of the academic environment. The Campus currently receives an average of about 5 hours of electricity from the national grid daily. This is due to the erratic power supple and inherent in the country, making learning conditions stressful, administration more tedious and the living conditions in the students and staff housing difficult. As an alternative the campus relies on fossil fuel powered generators which apart from high cost of maintenance, are grossly inefficient and constitute environmental pollution with the constant release of harmful gases and noise. The study investigated and assess the current state of energy supply within the various zones of the campus, and explored the potentials of introducing an efficient, safe and alternate source of power in the campus energy mix. It evaluates potential of solar energy installations and possible challenges associated with the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.
