Effect of Alternative Materials on Properties of Expansive Soil for Construction of Road Subgrade by using Cocnut Husk Ash

Pavement engineers have long recognized the long term benefits of improving the strength and durability of pavement soil by mixing in a cementitious binder during reconstruction or new construction. In lieu of these, this research was carried out to study the effects of coconut waste ash CWA on lime stabilized lateritic soil for road construction. Natural lateritic soil was collected from a borrow pit nearer location Preliminary tests such as natural moisture content, specific gravity, particle size distribution and Atterberg limits were carried out on the soil for classification and identification purposes according to BS 1377 part 2 1990 . Strength tests such as compaction, California bearing ratio and unconfined bearing ratio were also carried out on the natural lateritic soil and stabilized soil according to BS 1924 1990 . The soil sample was mixed with lime in the proportions of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 , and were each subjected to Atterberg limits tests and strengths to determine the optimum quantity of lime for stabilizing soil. The plastic index varied from 13.93 – 9.33 and 23.64 – 14.46 for lime stabilized soils with optimum values obtained at 8 and 6 respectively. Plastic index decreased as the percentages of lime and CWA increased for CWA of ratio 1 1, 3 2 and 2 3 i.e. PI varied from 8.63 to 11.91 . Notable improvements were also observed in the MDD, UCS, OMC and CBR values of stabilized soil therefore coconut waste ash can be used to stabilize lateritic soil. Hence, the use coconut waste ash CWA should be encouraged in the construction industry to reduce the cost

Transient Thermal Analysis for Heat Dissipation from Engine Cylinder Block with Different Shaped Holes in Fins using CFD

The cost of fuel and materials in all sectors is rising day by day. In the IC engine, the engine fails primarily because the heat transfer from the cylinder wall to the ambient air is inadequate. Heat is derived from the cylinder wall in the engine by means of convection heat transfer through the fins. In this study, a 3 dimensional numerical 3 D transient thermal state simulation was used to investigate the heat dissipation of the engine cylinder fin with holes of different shapes hexagonal and an elliptical. ANSYS 17.0 simulation software was used to research the physiognomy of the heat transfer physiognomies of an engine cylinder fin with and without hole. The results indicate that, the fin with an elliptic hole attain a temperature of 797.94 °C at 14 seconds in comparison to other where with hexagonal hole 798.02 °C, and without hole 798.14°C. So above values clearly shows that fin with an elliptic hole dissipates more heat as compare to fin with hexagonal hole or without hole. Fin with an elliptic hole have a total heat flux of 56122 W m² comparison to other where with hexagonal hole 49967 W m², and without hole 46704 W m². From the above results it is clearly shows that, the new proposed shape fin or fin configuration will greatly improve the heat transfer rate and increase the fin efficiency. Optimum results are obtained when we provide an elliptic hole in an engine cylinder fin

An Experimental Study on Stabilization of Clayey Soils by using Ceramic Waste Materials

The environment is being polluted by humans and in doing so, not only air and water but land is also being contaminated. The major contaminant present in the soil is montomornollite mineral it is the main responsible for swelling and shrinkage parameters in the clayey soils. These contaminations largely affect the geotechnical properties of soil, especially physical and chemical. Taking into consideration the structural safety of structures of such location it is necessary to consider the change in the geotechnical properties due to such contaminations In present study, the soil samples prepared with addition of ceramic waste by 5 , 10 ,15 ,20 and 25 has been used at first, in this paper the changes in the geotechnical properties like plastic limit, liquid limit, specific gravity, Optimum Moisture Content OMC was determined through proctor test. At those OMC, several tests like CBR, UCS, Consolidations tests were conducted. CBR test was carried in both un soaked and soaked conditions variation of ceramic waste has been used to modify their engineering properties and index properties of a black cotton soil.

An Experimental Study on Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil by using Bio Polymers

In developing countries like India, due to remarkable development in road infrastructure, soil stabilization has become major issue in constructional activity, stabilization is not only a method of altering or modifying of one or more soil properties to improve the engineering . Characteristics and performance of a soil ,but also processing available materials for the production of low –cost design and construction. Black cotton soils which expand when moisture content of soils is increased the clay mineral Montomorillonite is main responsible for expansive characteristics of soil. the expansive soils called swelling of soils or black cotton soils a large part of south India is covered with expansive soil another problem with this soil is strength is decreases with increases of degree of saturation heavy damages may occur buildings roads runways pipe lines and other structures built on such soils if proper preventive measures are not method. The damages can be prevented to an large extent if characteristics of expansive soil properly assessed suitable measures taken in design construction and maintenance of structures built on soils. This presents experimental investigation to study the effect of sugarcane baggage ash on swelling and shrinkage and mechanical properties of an soil. After finding out the experimental results in lab to know the evaluation and performance of baggage ash on the black cotton soil in the laboratory

Identification of Artificially Ripened Fruits using MATLAB

Better health is central to human happiness and well being. Eating ripened fruits gives the good health. People intake a lot of fruits to remain fit. Fruits contain important vitamin, minerals and also fibre. Ripening is the process in fruits that causes them to become more palatable and sweeter. Nowadays, fruits available in the market are mostly artificially ripened. Various types of chemicals are used to ripen the fruits artificially like calcium carbide, which is extremely hazardous to health. It causes health issues like diarrhea, general weakness, vomiting. But with human eye observation, it is difficult to find out artificially ripened fruits. To identify the artificially ripened fruits, we have design a software using MATLAB. It gets an input image of fruit under test and compares the features histogram values with naturally ripened one and detects fruits which are ripened artificially. In this method, the image processing is executed to detect the artificially ripened fruits. Captured images are inputs to an image processing unit. The image is processed and compared with a standard image to display whether the fruit is artificially ripened or not.

Study of Business House with two Different Materials Considering Framework Gantry using Staad.pro

In industrial structures trusses are assembled using bolted, riveted and welded joints as per load distribution. In India general steel structure which we use is FE 345 grade, which is heavy, and rigid to bear machinery load. These structures are comparatively much costlier than RCC structures. For their assembling cranks are required to fix at the specific position as manually they are not possible to lift. These structures has to bear machinery loads and live load of workers. In our study we are performing analysis of such structure considering material other that General steel hot rolled . In this study we are analyzing the same structure with same loading conditions using Cold formed steel structure. In this study we are comparing both the structures for lateral pressure using analysis tool Staad.pro which is advance analysis tool with optimization option for cost effective design. Comparative analysis was done while creating a structure using Hot rolled Steel sections and Cold Formed Steel CFS and results were presented on Shear Force, Axial Force, Support Reaction, Node Deflection and Cost analysis where Cold formed Steel was found durable in every case.

Comparative Study on Strength and Water Absorption of M35 Grade Paver Block using Fly Ash and Varying Proportions of Polypropylene Fibre

Fly ash is a huge waste available at thermal power plants in the country. Large consumption of fly ash in paver blocks will help the nation to make economical paver blocks and will address challenges associated with environmental issues and disposal of waste In the present study on M35 grade paver blocks with thickness 60mm and 80mm with replacement of OPC by 30 fly ash and addition of polypropylene fibre 0.0 to 0.5 with increment of 0.1 by weight of cement have been manufactured to access the suitability for Indian road surfaces for different applications. The blocks have been tested at the age 7 and 28 days for strength and durability criteria. For strength properties compressive strength and flexural strength test were conducted, both being important for applications for road surfacing. For durability properties water absorption has been studied. The result of compressive strength and flexural strength indicates that it is feasible to use OPC replaced by 30 fly ash and addition of 0.3 PPF in manufacturing of paver blocks. Paver blocks have attained target compressive strength and flexural strength at 28 days in all the grades.
