Study on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Historical Timber Building in Myanmar A Case Study of Pyay Hostel in Yangon University Campus

The assessment of existing timber structures requires the determination of the physical and mechanical properties of the individual timber members, which is often obtained by visual grading combined with information of small clear wood specimens. This study aims to investigate the properties of timber members for the seismic safety assessment and evaluation of existing timber building, Pyay Hostel situated in Yangon University. Because this building has been established in 1924, its life time is near 100 years and has some circumstances such as alteration of uses and detection of deterioration. The physical and mechanical properties of existing timber members such as moisture content, specific gravity, static bending, compression parallel to grain, compression perpendicular to grain, tension parallel to grain and shear parallel to grain are determined by experiment in the Structural Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, YTU. According to the experimental results, it is found that the physical properties of teak and pyingado used in this building are 10 and 14 of moisture content, and 0.56 and 0.8 for specific gravity. In the mechanical properties of timber members, the modulus of elasticity values for Teak and Pyingado are obtained 2.79x106 psi and 3.88x106 psi, and the modulus of rupture values of Teak and Pyingado are 1.94x104 psi and 2.81x104 psi respectively. On the other hand, it is found that the compressive strength of Teak and Pyingado are 636.69 psi and 1210.75 psi respectively. This investigation results are reasonable and applicable to use seismic safety assessment and evaluation of existing timber building.

To Study the Effect of Use of Geosynthetics Fibres in Sub grade Soil

Reinforcements and separation are the two functions of Geosynthetics in which pavement system is used in geogrids. The apertures are used in the products of geogrids. These products are mostly in large size and due to this, they are not used for getting separation of different materials. Gradation has main function to separate two different materials. Still, in theoretically geogrids can also give some separation mathods, but in a limited amount. In pavements, geogrids used separation method which is a secondary function or we can say it is use for some sepration of different materials and in reinforcement, geogrids used the primary function in pavements and geogrid used to improve the mechanically properties of engineering like M25 Grade Concrete. The reinforcement mechanisms associated with geogrids.

Design and Analysis of Pelton Wheel

This paper describes the design and analyzes the Pelton wheel for generating power of 400 Watt. A Pelton wheel is considered as an impulse turbine, a turbine that converts pressure head into velocity head. This thesis is to calculate the input power, output power, buckets and speed ratio, length of belt and efficiency of the turbine. The turbine with a jet diameter of 0.0254 m has been designed for the operational conditions of the Pelton wheel installed at the Mone Ta Wa Cave, Ayetharyar. The diameter of the runner is 0.254 m and the width of a bucket is 0.1143 m. The turbine has undergone efficiency testing and visual inspection during operation at a gross head of 20 m. The hydraulic efficiency is 96.35 and the output power is 400 Watt.

Folded Shorted Patch Antenna with Slots for RF Energy Harvesting in Wireless Sensor Network

There are various types of microstrip antenna that can be used for many applications in communication systems. This paper presents the design of a folded shorted patch antenna FSPA for the application of Radio Frequency RF energy harvesting system capable of receiving radio frequency of GSM 900 band 860MHz to 960MHz. The antenna is designed using microstrip technology on an FR 4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6. The antenna was designed and simulated using FEKO, the Electromagnetic solver software. One slot is incorporated into the upper patch of the FSPA. Simulated results show that this antenna can attain an impedance bandwidth of 32MHz from 884MHz to 916MHz at the center frequency of 900MHz with the slot. The results also reveal the good unidirectional radiation pattern and the stable gain over the operating frequency. This antenna is well compatible with using RF energy harvesting to receive the signal of the GSM 900 band.

Development of Android Controlled AC Dim Light

The light level in a room has a huge effect on one's mood and productivity. Lighting can contribute to your alertness and awakeness in the mornings, and it can either entice you to feel tired or keep you up all night. With all of these discoveries on the effects of lighting, it is becoming more and more important to be able to control lighting. In this paper, Bluetooth controlled AC dim light is constructed using TRIAC. The android application is developed using JDK in Android Eclipse which will control the on off function of the light bulb. Bluetooth wireless communication has been rising in popularity nowadays due to its low cost and wide range of applications. Moreover, most modern phones have Bluetooth, making it excellent controllers for Bluetooth supported devices. Serial data sent from the Android application is received by the Bluetooth receiver interfaced to the Arduino. Zero cross detection method is used for TRIAC gate trigger and Arduino uses serial data to generate appropriate pulses at a specific angle for TRIAC. Isolation between Arduino and ac source is considered and overall system is implemented using simulation and practical approaches.

Performance Comparison of Different Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Network in Air Pollution Area

Wireless sensor network is a wireless network consisting of small nodes with sensing, computation, and wireless communication capabilities. One of the most important issues in Wireless sensor networks WSNs is collecting and processing data perceived from the environment and sending that data to be processed and evaluated. Routing data towards the destination node is a fundamental task in WSNs. The data exchange is supported by multihop communications. Routing protocols are in charge of discovering and maintaining the routes in the networks. In this research work, the performance of the different routing protocols in wireless sensor network based on air pollution area is derived. Sensor nodes are deployed in two types of scenario grid and random. And, simulation result outcomes are evaluated using the different routing protocols like Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector AODV Destination Sequenced Distance Vector Routing DSDV and Dynamic Source Routing DSR in two scenarios. This system is implemented in Network Simulator NS2. The main focus of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the different routing protocols in random scenarios. The comparison between three different routing protocols is simulated between 10, 50 and 100 nodes.

Nonlinear Modeling and System Identification of a DC Gear Motor with Unknown Parameters

Modeling and identification of industrial systems is an essential stage in practical control design and applications. The paper presents linear, state space, nonlinear modeling and identification of a DC gear motor with real time experiments. The main aim of this research is to use the concept of modeling and System Identification method for observing the greater accuracy and better fitness system model, and validate it by applying various data sets of the hardware experiment. System Identification deals with the problem of building mathematical models of dynamical systems based on observed data from the systems. The methodology is based on results obtained from the simulation of theoretical concepts, which are then validated by repeating experiments on the motor. It is very important to do this validation because sometimes these theoretical concepts are not able to fully capture the nature of the physical elements, and both results may differ. Proceeding in this way, it can guarantee a greater extent that the results are correct.
