Effects of Termite Activities on Permeability Characteristics of Lateritic Soils in Ado-Ekiti, South Western, Nigeria

This research work evaluates the effects of termite activities on permeability characteristics of lateritic soils from two locations in Ado-Ekiti, South Western Nigeria. Six samples were taken from termite mound, that is, two each from top, bottom and where the queen of termite was found. Four other samples were taken from non-reworked surrounding soil.

These samples were subjected to permeability tests using grain size distribution and falling head permeameter. The results showed that values of coefficient of permeability obtained using both parameters showed a slight agreement in trend for the two locations. Generally, the values are low but those obtained on soils reworked by termites were observed to be higher than the non-reworked surrounding soils.

For instance, the values range from 4.90x10-5 ¬to 3.78x10-5 and 4.60x10-5 to 4.15x10-5 for non-reworked soils in locations 1 and 2 respectively, while for termite-reworked soils, slight increases were observed. It ranges from 7.29x10-5 to 6.10x10-5¬¬¬ and 6.95x10-5 to 4.53x10-5 for both locations 1 and 2 respectively. It therefore showed that there was a possible alteration of the permeability characteristics of the soil by the activities of the termite.

A Survey of Network-Based Detection and Defense Mechanisms Countering the IP Spoofing Problems

Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The phenomenal growth of the Internet owes much to the simplicity of its design principles, which allow to widely interconnecting heterogeneous systems. The design principles of Internet' do not provide any form of control for a server to dictate how much traffic it wants to receive and from whom.

As a result, Internet hosts are vulnerable to network attacks like Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, whose economic and social impact has grown to considerable proportions. One of the major threats to the Internet is source IP address spoofing. In current Internet communication world, validity of the source of IP packet is an important issue. The problems of IP spoofing alarm legitimate users of the Internet. This paper review recent progress of IP spoofing detection and defenses by various researchers.

NSGA-II Implementation for Resource Allocation in MIMO-OFDMA

One of the most challenging issues for future wireless communication systems is the provision of quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees to users over the harsh wireless channels given the limited resource availability. The aim of this paper is to probe the problem of dynamic subcarrier and bit allocation in downlink of MIMO-OFDMA systems.

Using Singular Value Decomposition, MIMO fading channel of each subcarrier is transformed into an equivalent bank of parallel SISO sub-channels. NSGA-II is handled which is a multi-objective Genetic Algorithm, for joint allocation of bits and subcarriers, in the downlink of MIMO-OFDMA system. NSGA-II is intended for optimization problems involving multiple conflicting objectives. Here the two conflicting objectives are Rate Maximization and Transmit Power Minimization.

Digital Data Security by using Quantum Cryptography

Security is the most common aspect of today' world, when all things are going to digitize then make them secure over the communication channel has become the prime aim of the digital service providers. Although many encryption and decryption techniques are available in the field of the cryptography, but they all are based on mathematical calculation which are difficult to solve but not impossible. The all existing techniques can be break by using quantum computer and some extra efforts.

But Quantum Cryptography that is free from the mathematical calculations and large prime number factorization is solution of this type of problems. Quantum Cryptography based on the laws of physics and quantum mechanics which gives the most secure way of encryption and decryption. In this paper Key Generation and Exchanging of Key is implemented by using Visual Basic software to secure the digital data over the communication channel.

Quantum cryptography will use Photons to transmit the information over the channel which are polarized at different orientation which are 00,450,900 and 1350 from sender at some basis and these polarized information is received by second party at other end and receiver will match the received photon with his photon on his basis and matched photons will form the Key, and if anyone try to hack that information both parties will come to know about the hacking.

A Study on Properties of Modified Rotor Spun Yarn

Fibers due to their large length-diameter ratio are the most effective materials in supporting tensile loads still. Many textile applications do introduce fiber compressions either in a simple form or under complex loading conditions. The majority of these compressive loadings are directed laterally across the fiber axis like compression of fibrous assembly during draftee. Compression occurring to fabric during calendaring and embossing treatments etc.

A special pre-compression apparatus was fabricated and mounted before the entry of fibrous strand into opening roller of rotor spinning frame. Cotton Slivers were pre-compressed in this zone at varying loads and the effect of this pre-compression on the resultant yam has been studied. The yam properties considered for the study are the studies are U%, tenacity, elongation, hairiness and imperfections.

The drawback with rotor spun yams is lower tenacity and elongation which always need an improvement. Modified rotor spun yams obtained as a result of pre-compression of slivers shows lesser U %, reduced thin, dick and naps, lower hairiness values and mainly improved tenacity, elongation and work of rupture which would be a vital point for the industry.

Design Analysis & Fabrication of Test Rig for Piston Pin Fatigue Life Assessment

Every component has certain lifetime in order to increase their lifetime different manufacturing methods are to be used. The studies indicate that the greatest stress appears on the upper end of the piston pin and this stress concentration is one of the mainly reason for fatigue failure of piston pin. In order to increase the fatigue life, automobile industries tries to fabricate the piston pin in various methods. Since the pin is subject to fluctuating kind of load during its service condition, the estimation of the life of the piston pin is very much essential.

Also this exercise help us to identify which method of production has yield more life. Our main objective is to design and fabricate a test rig for fatigue test of piston pin. The fixtures for simulating actual service condition is modeled and analyzed using CATIA and ANSYS software' and based on the results the dimensions for each component are evolved. Also proved that the fixture developed in this works satisfactorily and the given piston pin serves for more than 300000 cycles for the given loads.

A Study on Mechanical Properties of E-Glass Polypropylene Epoxy and S-Glass Polypropylene Epoxy Composites

There are basic two phase of composite material, in which one is known as matrix material and another one is called reinforcing material. The reinforcing material is embedded over matrix material. The matrix material is continuous phase and reinforcing is discontinuous phase. The reinforcing phase is much harder than matrix phase. In composite material matrix phase removes the stresses between reinforcing phase and also protect from mechanical and environmental damage. The function of reinforcing material is to improve mechanical and thermal properties of composites.

Composite are hybrid of two or more material such as reinforced polymer, metal or ceramics. The aim of the present work is to fabricate E-glass epoxy composite and S-glass epoxy composite with polypropylene as filler material. The fabricated laminates are then tested for mechanical properties with varying percentage of filler material. The results obtained for E-glass epoxy composite and S-glass epoxy composites are then compared. The composites with optimum results are recommended.
