Optimization of Scheduling in FMS using Heuristic Approaches: A Case Study

The flow shop scheduling problems are experiencing a huge eminence in this modern era of industrialization. In the present scenario we find almost every industry to be focusing prominently on the scheduling of the machines working in them, as it is a significant factor in deciding the net productivity. Nowadays almost each and every manufacturing system is involved in following a preplanned schedule of machine operation considering the demand criterion put forth.

Flexible manufacturing system being one of them is also following the same path. The largely increasing number of machines and jobs involved in the manufacturing operations has marked a huge complexity in their scheduling. Thus a proper scheduling technique is the only solution which can prove as an aid to the situation. Moving forth in the same direction, this thesis presents a few prominent methods to solve a flow shop scheduling problem.

Some major heuristics algorithms are the CDS algorithm, Palmer's algorithm, and NEH algorithm are considered in this paper for finding the most optimized result. A comparison between the heuristics algorithms has also been included in this thesis to make some conclusions upon their individual and cumulative efficiencies. The input parameters given in the problem are considered to be the basis while calculating the make span. To reduce the time involved in the whole process and the chances of human error in the calculations, a java programming code has also been generated.

A Dynamic Scratchpad Memory Collaborated with Cache Memory for Transferring Data for Multi-bit Error Correction

Modern embedded processors include both scratchpad memory (SPM) and cache memory in their architectures. SPM's are prone to soft errors like Single event upsets (SEUs) and Single event multiple upsets (SEMUs). For correcting soft errors, we use Error Correcting Codes (ECC) like single-error correction double-error detection (SEC-DED) and SEC-DED double-adjacent error correction (SEC-DED-DAEC) and parity duplication approach. These approaches are used only error correction for less number of corrections and thus increases speed.

This paper proposes a duplication scheme, cache-assisted duplicated SPM(CADS) to correct SEUs and SEMUs in data SPM lines detected by a low-cost error detecting code. This duplication approach does error detection in SPM which is faster than ECC providing multibit error correction. The extension is to include DMA with ring descriptors. The descriptor-based model provides the most flexibility in managing a system's DMA faster data transfers to or from Scratchpad memory.

Enhancement of Heat Transfer Analysis and Optimization of Engine Fins of Varying Geometry

The Engine cylinder is one of the major automobile components, which is subjected to high temperature variations and thermal stresses. In order to cool the cylinder, fins are provided on the cylinder to increase the rate of heat transfer. By doing thermal analysis on the engine cylinder fins, it is helpful to know the heat dissipation inside the cylinder. The principle implemented in this project is to increase the heat dissipation rate by using the invisible working fluid, nothing but air. As know, by increasing the surface area we can increase the heat dissipation rate, so designing such a large complex engine is very difficult.

The main purpose of using these cooling fins is to cool the engine cylinder by air. The main aim of the project is to analyse the thermal properties by varying geometry, material, distance between the fins and thickness of cylinder fins. Parametric models of cylinder with fins have been developed to predict the transient thermal behaviour. The models are created by varying the geometry circular and also by varying thickness of the fins for both geometries.

The 3D modelling software used is Pro/Engineer. Thermal analysis is done on the cylinder fins to determine variation temperature distribution over time. The analysis is done using ANSYS. Thermal analysis determines temperatures and other thermal quantities. In this thesis, using materials cast iron, Copper and Aluminium alloy 6082 are also for cylinder fin body. Thermal analysis is done using all the three materials by changing geometries, distance between the fins and thickness of the fins for the actual model of the cylinder fin body.

Performance and Emission Characteristics of Pyrolysed Fuel of Tyre Blended with Diesel in Diesel Engine

The waste management of scrap tyre causes impact on environment due to its non-degradable property. Therefore the recycling of tyre scrap is to be considered for improving the energy conversion from solid waste management. The objective of this project is to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of diesel blended with Tyre Prolysis Oil(TPO) in direct injection(DI) diesel engine. The tyre oil obtained at 713 K through pyrolysis process of waste tyre. The synthesized oil is then processed by desulphurization to reduce the sulphur content and transesterification for blending it with diesel.

The various blends of composition 10%TPO and 90% diesel, 20%TPO and 80% diesel is prepared. Through these blends the improvement of performance and emission characteristics such as NOX, CO2, HC were identified and compared with conventional diesel fuel.

Safety Challenge in High Rise Building

According to the International Building Code and the Building Construction and Safety Code, high-rise buildings are buildings of 75 feet or greater in height measured from the lowest level of fire department vehicle access to the floor of the highest occupiable story. high-rise buildings increase in number every year and the most common high-rise buildings are the commercial ones, but recently investors have turned part of their attention to residential high-rise buildings which is also on the increase and for that matter the focus of this study.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of high rise living upon residents '˜satisfaction. My study specifically attempts to determine the important benefits of living in high rise buildings, to determine the critical challenges faced by residents of high rise buildings, to determine the level of satisfaction of occupants of high rise buildings and to make recommendations to improve on present and future high building schemes.

In achieving the objectives of this paper, the survey design was chosen. The target population involved all occupants of residential high-rise building with a convenient sample of 65 respondents selected randomly to participate. The structured questionnaire was used to collect views from respondents and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to analyze the data. The study found that despite the challenges occupants faced with high living, occupants were generally satisfied and also enjoyed the benefits of privacy and luxury living.

The study however, ended with some recommendations. Accident cases from machines/tools always being a major percentage but deaths are mainly by falling and electric shocks. In most cases, the control of safety management at sites is not strictly, frequently slacken while the owner and contractors only focusing on completion schedule and profits; insufficient interest to safety for people on sites. Major part is from the lack of understandings/perception on safety of the workers themselves. Everyone should aware on the important of safety, everyone should aware about the preciousness of human being and many losses comes from the accidents.

An Overview on Latest Trend of Face Milling Operation

Milling is one of the widely used methods to remove material from the surface of a job. It employs a milling tool which has multiple number of cutting points and is rotated over the work so as to remove the material. Face Milling, on the other hand, is one of the types of milling process in which the surface from which the material has to be removed is placed perpendicular to the cutter axis.

Thus, it is very important to know about the life of the tool as it determines the surface finish of the work. Longer the tool life better is the overall output. Therefore, by selecting different parameters such as process parameter, geometry parameter and machining parameter properly, the life of the tool can be improved.

Framework for Productivity of Precast Concrete Elements Using Multivariable Linear Regression Technique

A statistical tool that allows us to analyse how multiple independent variables are related to a dependent variable is known as multi variable linear regression technique. The examination of these relationships leads to the formation of networks of variables that provide the basis for the development of theories about a phenomenon. For the productivity estimation, there can be so many factors that influence the productivity of Precast element .

Precast concrete products are generally used to shorten project duration and provide higher quality and more sustainable construction projects. There are many factors affecting productivity in precast concrete construction sites are availability of experience labour, availability of tools and equipment, frequency of inspection, payment delay, healthy management, health status, quality of framework, maintenance. This study contributes to the construction management knowledge by providing simple but effective models to increase productivity precast elements.
